[NEWS] Hyundai and Kia just smashed their Oct. sales records: Hyundai saw an 18% YoY increase, selling over 71,000 vehicles. Meanwhile, Kia followed suit with 68,908 units sold, a 16% bump from last year’s Oct. record. A key driver of growth? Sales of EV (and mostly) hybrid models. Bottom line: 15+ years ago — a lot of consumers (and dealers) looked down on Hyundai/Kia. But today? They’re dominating with one of the sharpest turnarounds in the industry. [NEWS] Auto brand loyalty has ticked up for 16 months in a row: The reason? New car inventory has swelled from 1M units in Jan. 2022 to nearly 3M by Aug. 2024 – and more options are making it easier for buyers to stay with their preferred brands. Leasing is also a major factor here — Now accounting for 25% of new transactions, leasing offers buyers — especially in the luxury market — a chance to drive brands they might not afford to purchase outright. And on top of that… shorter transaction cycles keep lessees more connected to their local dealerships. [NEWS] Volkswagen is hitting the reset button: To stay competitive, the company says it needs to save 4B euros and boost return on sales by 6.5%. Its new plan is to close at least 3 factories in Germany—but wage cuts and layoffs are also on the table. Although pushback has been severe, VW leaders say they don’t have a choice. Global sales were down 7% in Q3, putting the brand on red alert. But there’s a problem—the downsizing plan comes just days after announcing two new EVs. Those models will be made by Scout Motors (which VW acquired back in 2021) at a brand-new facility in the U.S. This mixed messaging makes VW's sense of urgency unclear — Especially since EVs are still mostly unprofitable for most automakers. Bottom line: Volkswagen is taking bold steps to move forward, even if it means making some unpopular decisions. [NEWS] Supply gaps are crunching certified pre-owned (CPO) car sales: Used retail vehicle sales dipped 9% MoM in Sept. — but CPO sales took an even harder hit — dropping 22.4%, with 48,000 fewer units sold. The reasons? Fewer selling days and severe storms took a toll. But it’s not just seasonal… Dealers are facing an ongoing shortage of late-model used vehicles—a ripple effect of COVID-era production cuts. With fewer cars coming off-lease, inventory is tight, and high-quality used vehicles are harder to come by. To adapt and give dealers some added flexibility, automakers are expanding CPO programs — Toyota now certifies cars up to 10 years old, and Honda followed suit. Yet — the programs are just a start — sourcing quality inventory will be the real make-or-break factor for dealers. Should carriers and dealers mingle a little bit more? What would happen if they did? 💡 "They would probably understand each other’s pain points. They would be upfront about things and listen. (There are some good brokers out there, honestly, too.) So like in the brokerage space, there are those situations that arise where you're just not up front. ⚡ You're just not telling the truth about it. Like what's going on. (The situation that's happening, too.) And people just want to know. I want to know if something's going to be delayed. I wanted to know as soon as possible. 🚚 Listen, at the end of the day, things do happen. We are dealing with trucks. We’re dealing with lives, right? But it’s gotten to this point where people are hiding things. (The carriers hiding things too, right?) 💲 Because the carrier is trying to route plan and they’re trying to get the most money they can for certain lanes. Dealers Drop Shipping Brokers After Working With Auto Hauler Exchange 💥 "We have some of the bigger dealership shippers out there that are buying from auctions from all over the country. We've just seen that you don't need a lot of manual touches. 🛑 You don't need a broker in the middle there - picking which carriers are going to get which loads, or haggling the price and dropping it - it slows things down. We have a large customer in Kansas City (they were using one of the larger brokers in the space). ⏳ They shared with us some of their data (what they moved their units for days-wise compared to what they're moving now for the last year on Auto Hauler Exchange). They're saving 33% on their time and they're probably saving another 15-20% in money (because we don't need to be in the middle taking these large cuts in between). 👀 I've also had managers that are watching multiple stores. Maybe one of their stores is using Auto Hauler Exchange and the other store is using one of the larger brokers, 💡 And that manager's gone to that other store and said, 'Listen, you're not using them anymore.'
