Leveraging ideas, people and capital to close the racial wealth gap and achieve shared prosperity.
About us
Atlanta Wealth Building Initiative is an intermediary that seeks to achieve shared prosperity by closing the racial wealth gap through community wealth building strategies. We are a community of investors, advocates, and activists working to transform systems and structures of capital to create opportunities for African Americans and people of color in Atlanta and across the South. We promote understanding of community wealth-building strategies to cultivate the engagement, capacity, leadership necessary to shape a new economic narrative in Atlanta. By challenging systemic bias and introducing new systems and structures of capital, AWBI aims to re-engineer and redesign Atlanta’s economic ecosystem such that all sectors, from small businesses to large corporations, to anchor institutions, philanthropy, nonprofits and government, consider day to day how to integrate the economic well-being of our most disenfranchised families and communities into their strategy and operations.

Kim Addie: “Many might consider you all to be competitors, right? You all are serving businesses in the region, black businesses in the region. Explain why that's the opposite.” Elizabeth Wilson, executive director of Georgia Micro Enterprise Network, Inc. shares what undergirds her organization’s collaboration with Atlanta Business League and Atlanta Black Chambers, in episode 6 of #blackwealthunlocked. https://lnkd.in/eJ9J9eEd #smallbusiness #entrepreneurship #economicjustice

Congratulations, team! 👏 👏
Through a partnership with the GreenLight Fund's Amplify program and RevJen my colleague, Courtney Collins, MPA, and I will have completed facilitation and coaching for the Fuelworks Revenue Infrastructure Workshop with 15 Black-led organizational leadership teams next month. By committing to this dedicated time as leadership teams, organizations will utilize a common language and framework to surface their most significant revenue challenges, identify their revenue priorities, and set actionable next steps to guide their revenue strategy. The main objective is to change how organizations think about and approach revenue. It's important to note that many capacity-building initiatives do not typically delve into this level of revenue model analysis. I had a full circle moment when I read the recent research on the non-profit sector released by Independent Sector and United for ALICE (https://lnkd.in/eUSXMBJc), underscoring the critical importance of this effort for Black-led non-profits in the absence of systemic solutions. The findings from the report "The Financial Insecurity in the Non-profit Workforce" are staggering. More than one out of five non-profit workers struggle to afford basic living expenses where they reside. The situation is even more dire for non-profit workers of color, women, and individuals with disabilities. A few critical themes from NPQ... 1. nonprofit organizations that often champion racial equity externally may still struggle to address inequities within their own workforce. 2. Black and Hispanic workers were much more likely to be below that threshold than White workers. 3. Funders should ensure that their financial support extends to nonprofit organizations’ internal stability, including the livelihoods of their staff. To the leaders of these institutions, my gratitude for you is deep. Wande Okunoren-Meadows Charles C.
