During late nights working in Brooklyn, Anar, Lex and I would talk about what an agency should look like. At the time, it was just girls in their 20s cooking up ideas at 10PM, exhausted from pitching endlessly. Four years and a few jobs later, I was burnt out yet again and wondered if this is what life would be like until retirement. In came a text from Anar. Fate decided it was time for all of us to go all in on Background Noise. Growing up, I knew I would start a company one day and BGN is truly a manifestation of an immigrant kid dream. It is a place where we can be ourselves and do the work that inspires us. It is why we continue to do pro bono work for small businesses, seek out partnerships with diverse creators and work with like-minded people. Life is so insanely different than it was a year ago and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Wassup yall - its Lex. My journey has been 100% God and 100% blood, sweat and tears. I started BGN as a side hustle to get more money but also because I knew things could be done better. I was working at a place that was killing my spirit and energy and I was becoming so unmotivated - they sucked fr. One thing about me though - if I don't like something, I'ma fix it. So I started going hard at building my own company every night from 7p-3am. Had no idea what BGN would grow into but I knew it would be special. Then fast forward - Anar and Grace came back into my life and BGN began to grow into it’s God intended form - a powerhouse space meant for people that look and think like us. Excited for folks to see what we've been cooking up - we the greatest.

We're here to make change.
Anar Shah, Alexis Toney, and I started Background Noise because we were tired of spaces that failed to empower underrepresented communities. The result has been the most fulfilling experience of my career: creating a company alongside the most driven, inspiring, and empathetic women I know, built on the values we believe in. Recently, I was invited to speak on a panel by a dear friend who is deeply committed to female empowerment. And today, I came across this comment. It’s a reminder that misogyny remains deeply rooted in the workplace. There is a systemic inability to uplift others without feeling as though something is being taken away. If growing up Buddhist has taught me anything, it's that there was and never will be a “you” without the “all.” Misogyny and racism will continue to close doors, but we will keep amplifying the voices of underrepresented “background noise.” It is why we continue to dedicate our time to pro bono work for small BIPOC and female-owned small businesses. It is why we mentor outside of our company. And it is why we’re choosing to be here today.
