I'm still on cloud nine after an incredible day of learning and getting to know the team at Balboa. The more than 120 strong: clinic staff, MAs, admins, insurance, coding, and billing specialists who make patient care possible for tens of thousands of residents across Southern California. A few months ago I shared news of our partnership with Balboa Nephrology. Last week, I had a chance to attend and participate in their annual team education day. They call it "A Hero's Journey." It's an annual full-day event dedicated to enhancing staff knowledge and skills to provide exceptional care for Balboa's patients, their heroes. Through inspiring stories, expert insights, and interactive sessions, the Balboa team empowered their staff to become even stronger advocates for kidney health. Every one of us in the room could feel it. From hearing patients' stories of overcoming truly awe-inspiring obstacles, to heartfelt discussions about the value of peer support and mentorship, and even a group meditation session, we all left the building a bit lighter and better prepared for the days ahead. As you can see from a few of these pictures, I was lucky enough to meet 100+ members of the staff, learn more about their day to day work, and share our VR patient stories and Lifeliqe's dialysis technician training program through fun, interactive demos. I kicked off our panel with a quote that I always love from Bijal - "Together, we're on a mission to address health inequity involving people with CKD and ESKD, arming them with knowledge, confidence, and control as they navigate their healthcare journey. This partnership isn't just about expertise; it's about turning kidney care into an adventure, where patients are the heroes of their own stories!" I'll be writing quite a bit more about this event in an upcoming issue of Signals with the help and guidance of my good friend, Kiku B.. In the meantime, I want to send a heartfelt thank you to every person I met last week. Thank you for all you do for patients and families, and for sharing your time and energy with me. Days like this are what this crazy job is all about - we healthcare founders live for these moments. Tagging a short list of people I was excited to see again and meet for the first time. At the Home Training Center of San Diego, we do more than train — we empower! Our nurses and technicians undergo comprehensive cross-training in home hemodialysis (HHD), peritoneal dialysis (PD), and in-center. This enhances skills, broadens the mindset, and opens up career opportunities. A side effect we have seen is a rise in HOPE in healthcare, helping patients and nurses/PCTs alike see the possibilities for better care in dialysis and professional growth. We celebrate the success stories of our team members who have advanced into larger roles. We have even seen nurses coming back to kidney care.
