"Here we sit up in the mountains, and no one ever thought that a hurricane would come up here and unleash this kind of flooding. It's hard for people to comprehend the unknown, and that's what we dealt with." Ballad Health Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Alan Levine recounts the unprecedented weather event caused by Hurricane Helene. "The people who were there at [Unicoi County Hospital] were thinking quickly on their feet, keeping us informed, seeking our guidance, and we were communicating with them. I think what you would hear is that the fact we were there, watching and giving them guidance, gave them comfort that they weren't alone. We had the governor of Tennessee, the governor of Virginia, and both state emergency teams behind us, the Virginia State Police, and the Tennessee National Guard. I mean, we were all working together. And the good news is, the story is that people's lives were saved, and the story isn't that anyone died because they didn't." Boone McCrary, RN, a beloved nurse at Greeneville Community Hospital and a member of our Ballad Health family, tragically lost his life in the flash floods from Hurricane Helene. It was reported he was in a boat with his dog attempting to save the life of a civilian from the rapid floodwaters. Both Boone and his dog were found deceased by search and rescue personnel. This is an incredibly painful moment for all of us, and our hearts go out to Boone's family, friends and colleagues at Greeneville Community Hospital, as well as everyone who is suffering during this time of profound loss. The Ballad Health team will remember Boone as the ultimate caregiver who was kind and compassionate with a larger-than-life personality. The past few days, we have heard our team share stories of how he sang to team members and patients to lighten the mood and that he loved music and his beloved chocolate lab, Moss, who was always with him. We are committed to being there for each of our team members as we grieve and work through the challenging days ahead together. Thank you for respecting the privacy of those affected as we navigate this tragedy. We know this is an extraordinarily difficult time for everyone. Counseling and support services for team members and their immediate family are available through our Employee Assistance Program (EAP). EAP is available to assist team members and families with confidential mental health and substance abuse services through Ballad Health Counseling Services. Ballad Health provides coverage at no cost. Additionally, our 24/7 Respond Crisis Hotline is available to the public and can be reached at 800-366-1132. #balladhealth

Following regionwide devastation left in the wake of Hurricane Helene, Ballad Health is working with the Unicoi County Emergency Operations Center, Jackson-Madison County Regional Health Department, Madison County Fire Department and EMS from Jackson-Madison County in Western Tennessee to open a Medical Response Unit. Located in the auditorium parking lot of Unicoi County High School in Erwin, the site provides 24/7 first aid and triage for minor illnesses and injuries, including: • Basic treatment of infections • Stabilization and transfer for trauma and serious conditions • Respiratory infections • Skin infections “Our attention is first and foremost on the well-being of our friends in Unicoi County,” said Ballad Health Chairman and CEO Alan Levine. “With the hospital being closed, our focus is on immediate emergency care and first aid for the public and for first responders. Thanks to the swift action of the local Emergency Management Agency and the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency, our request for this Medical Response Unit was approved and mobilized.” Ballad Health and its partnering organizations will operate the Medical Response Unit in coordination with local Emergency Medical Service to ensure patients are cared for in the proper setting. The Medical Response Unit is not a permanent solution, and Ballad Health leadership is considering longer-term solutions. “Ballad Health will not abandon Unicoi County, and we are staying right here to support them during this difficult time,” added Levine. “Right now, access to emergency care is most critical, and we are grateful for our friends from Jackson-Madison County who responded immediately when requested.” In addition to the Medical Response Unit, Ballad Health and its team members are contributing to disaster relief efforts across the Appalachian Highlands. Collection barrels have been placed in the lobbies of all Ballad Health hospitals to take donated goods, such as bottled water; cleaning equipment; new bedding; clothing, socks and shoes; and nonperishable food. The health system is also facilitating financial assistance with the Ballad Health Foundation Disaster Relief Fund that addresses the greatest needs for team members, patients and the community. The fund can be accessed online at https://lnkd.in/gVh3JaYQ. The Medical Response Unit is located at 700 S. Mohawk Drive in Erwin. Today, our team proudly celebrated 30 years of Bristol Regional Medical Center! 🎂 In January 1994, the new Bristol Regional Medical Center was ready to serve the community through physician partnership, technological innovation and growth. The 348-bed facility was built on 120 acres adjacent to I-81. With the new facility about to open, patients were moved across town from the hospital’s former site. Opening a new hospital across town was one thing, but moving the patients posed an entirely different challenge. Three decades ago, the team at Bristol Regional Medical Center successfully undertook the monumental task of relocating more than 200 patients from the former Bristol Memorial Hospital. Today, Bristol Regional is home to leading-edge medical technology, such as stereotactic radiosurgery with TrueBeam STx with Brainlab, multidimensional cardiac catheterization laboratories and surgical robotics, including DaVinci Xi for minimally invasive surgery and MAKO for joint replacement surgery. Bristol Regional is recognized as a High-Performing Hospital by U.S. News & World Report, earning "High Performing" ratings for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, heart failure, heart attack, stroke and kidney failure, and it is a recipient of the 2020 Chest Pain – MI Registry Gold Performance Achievement Award, the Gold NSTEMI recognition in the Mission: Lifeline® program and STEMI Gold Receiving recognition in the Mission: Lifeline® program. None of this progress would have been possible without the dedication and hard work of our staff, physicians, nurses and volunteers, whose commitment to excellence in patient care has shaped Bristol Regional into what it is today. We thank our community members, supporters and partners for trusting us with your care and for believing in our mission over the past 30 years. Learn more at https://lnkd.in/gKuGFq-U and visit our Facebook page for more photos from today's celebration! #balladhealth

Team members from Ballad Health's southern region were excited to join Tennessee's First Lady, Maria Lee, for a day of service at Roan Mountain State Park. Through the First Lady's Tennessee Serves initiative, we worked on a native garden restoration project at the historic Miller Farmstead, removing invasive plants along the Doe River and Moonshiners Run Trail. Learn more about the initiative as we recognize National Public Lands Day this September at https://ow.ly/9ye150Tvj57. #balladhealth | Tennessee State Parks
