A day of mourning, 26 of March 2024, six lives were taken by the collapse of the #KeyBridge. Did you know that the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is the primary source of federal support for museums in the U.S.? This vital agency provides grants, research, and professional development to help museums all over the country better serve their communities. Like many institutions, in Baltimore and across the country, the BMI has also benefited from the support of IMLS grants. The recent Executive Order, “Continuing the Reduction of the Federal Bureaucracy,” issued by President Trump demands further cuts to IMLS, despite the agency making up only 0.0046% of the overall federal budget. Cutting IMLS ignores the 96% of Americans who support maintaining or increasing museum funding (according to a 2018 study conducted by the American Alliance of Museums) and jeopardizes institutions that educate, inspire, and strengthen our communities. 🔗 TAKE ACTION: Access American Alliance of Museums resources, templates, and information at https://lnkd.in/dSp9DTnB Help us protect IMLS and the many Libraries and Museums they support. Did you make it to Liquid Courage at the BMI on Friday, February 28? If not, you missed out on something truly special — a one-night-only viewing of special collection items celebrating the history of cocktailing and distilling in Maryland. Our Collections and Events teams worked together to dust off some key artifacts and share them with guests during Liquid Courage. Items included a Mount Vernon Whiskey bottle, a Wilson Whiskey crate, a ceramic Pointer Whiskey bottle, and a Copper Still. As we continue to craft engaging public programs at the BMI, we're excited to continue bringing artifacts and archives into the light of day! The Maryland Transportation Authority announced that construction will begin on a replacement for the Key Bridge in early 2025. Join the Baltimore Museum of Industry tomorrow (1/28) at 7:00 PM for a virtual presentation on the history of the bridge, including its construction in the 70s. Attendees will also hear the latest status of the bridge’s reconstruction and a little about the BMI’s efforts to preserve the legacy of the original structure.
