    CEO @ Retention.com & RB2B | Person-Level Website Visitor Identity | Push LinkedIn Profiles to Slack in Real-Time, 100% Free!

We closed January at $25.3m ARR (+.8%). RB2B was up 9% at $4.5m ARR and Retention.com was down 1% at $20.8m ARR. Here’s what went well (and not so well) last month: What went well: 1. Despite cutting all marketing expense in Dec ($100k/mo), RB2B grew 9%  2. First true enterprise deal closed on Dec 31 at Retention! 3. We're making progress on our “run the signal through CRM” hypothesis at RB2B, SFDC integration finishes this week 4. Forming a VERY strong partnership w/ Bloomreach at R! 5. Keleigh planned what will be an amazing full-team offsite next week 6. We substantially improved our identity at RB2B - much higher coverage 7. We are SOC2 Type II Compliant (and I need to add it to our websites) 8. Pete thinks we had our best Live Event (with Clay) last week - I agree 9. We generated $1,112,904 of free cash (profit) in January What went NOT so well: 1. Everybody in ecomm who is going to cancel does so after the holidays 2. RB2B product is nowhere close to where we want it to be (but it will be) 3. I am very confused about how to look at attribution with RB2B TAKEAWAY: We shrunk 2.5% in Q124, but ended up growing 15% y-o-y. We also shrunk in Q121 and Q122. (The only reason we didn’t in Q123 is we were having an out-of-body product-market fit experience that has since subsided) I think Q1 is a hard quarter for anybody selling to ecommerce. Thankfully, somehow, RB2B came to the rescue this January. But here’s the crazy thing… For the life of me, I can’t understand WHY it came to the rescue. I declared RB2B dead on Nov 21, and between then and Jan 1 we got so absolutely slaughtered by churn that we didn’t grow at all. I also chopped all of our marketing expense, because my view was we were burning leads bringing people on to a product that wasn’t ready yet. What happened? Up 9% month-over-month. To $4.5m ARR. For the life of me I can’t explain how or why that happened. But here I am - once again - saying I cut spend and growth sped up. Just like in mid-2023, when I cut our BDR org. Maybe the Startup Gods just wants to send me a message. The most valuable message a founder could ever hear. What’s that message? “Get smaller… and thank me later.” P.S. I started a newsletter. • We are certainly not ready to "loop back again in the New Year", we are delivering more upgrades to our clients than ever before. In November we released: 1️⃣ Stripe Meta Data Segments- you can now stack Clearbit, Stripe meta data, Stripe subscription data and custom attributes to gain the most granular customer insights possible! 2️⃣ Auto-Segments- Baremetrics will automatically detect your connected subscription platforms (Google Play, App Store, Stripe etc) and create clear and customisable segments automatically. 3️⃣ Recurly Improvements- we have enhanced our handling of backdated subscriptions to stop un-necessary reprocessing. Accurate analytics at all times! 4️⃣ Revenue Modelling beta- combine your sales funnel figures with current revenue metrics to model your future growth. How would an increase in my Trial to NPC conversion rate at an ASP of $X improve my MRR? 5️⃣ Additional Recover emails- we added additional emails in our Recover sequence so you can further customise your dunning workflows. 🎄 While December is traditionally slower we are working on some serious technical enhancements that will increase accuracy for all connectors as well as finally launching our Forecast tool on the Xero app store! 🎅
