basys.ai | Building the Operating System for Healthcare

Just another month in the life, with a brief stint at my own apartment while I catch my breath. Continuing the busy conference season and optioning time by traveling during off-hours and weekend! I’ll be speaking at the HLTH Inc. Founder Summit in Vegas, presenting to clients at California Association of Health Plans annual conference in Desert Springs and Becker's Healthcare Payer Full Roundtable in Chicago, and speaking at a generative AI conference in Santa Clara. Plus, I’ll be at the Prix Galien by The Galien Foundation in New York for a nomination. This follows two back-to-back conferences in Minneapolis and DC that were both energizing and insightful. Balancing all of this while executing my main role, which is staying close to clients and driving us forward has kept me on my toes. All this while wrapping up a board meeting and a white paper in the mix. Grateful for the support of the basys team, which keeps me sharp and intellectually engaged as we prepare to close a few deals before Thanksgiving!

Here’s my latest for Forbes on the topic. In the next year or so, we will see a bunch of mergers and strategic partnerships, which we’d initiate as well. Looking forward to the future! Had an amazing conversation on healthcare, it’s operational processes (who wouldn’t love them!), and how to avoid them with these remarkable gentlemen from RELI Group, Inc., WPS, A Health Solutions Company, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and University of California, Berkeley. Nothing I wouldn’t expect from a WEDI conference. basys.ai Arpan Saxena YiDing Yu, MD John L Brooks III James Roosevelt Sachin H. I’m usually private about my personal life, but this comes from a place of nostalgia and deep gratitude for my parents. I find myself pushing a little harder because of my upbringing. Though not my biological parents, my mom and dad took me in and faced immense pressure to give me up to someone whose intentions they weren’t sure about. They could have chosen the easier path—taken job promotions or other opportunities—but instead, (glossing over the details a little) they sacrificed so much to keep me with them. Honestly, I’m not sure I would’ve had the strength to make the same choice. But their resilience shaped who I am and how I approach my journey, even as a founder. In moments of uncertainty and while making difficult choices in my startup, I often reflect on what they would do. Would they push harder or give up? That question drives me. And the answer is usually clear.

basys.ai | Building the Operating System for Healthcare

I recently spoke with a founder who left their startup, which later became a success, and it left me reflecting on three key lessons: 1. Integrity matters more than the money you might make. Simple as that. If you’re smart and in the right ecosystem, opportunities will always find you. 2. Never burn bridges. Relationships are everything. I believe in making genuine connections. If it doesn’t click, that’s okay—forcing it won’t work. 3. Startups aren’t overnight successes, no matter how they may seem. It’s about repeatability and scaling, which only happens after building a solid brand. I’m gaining an even deeper appreciation for scaling basys.ai right now.

basys.ai | Building the Operating System for Healthcare

It’s unsettling how many people head into startups without the critical questions. Joining an early-stage startup as one of the first team members is an exhilarating opportunity that brings its own unique challenges and rewards. The key litmus test is to assess whether you can envision yourself following the founder to their next venture. As a founder, I’ve noticed that many people don’t ask enough questions during the hiring process. If I’m going to dedicate significant time to working alongside someone, I’d want to ensure that we can collaborate effectively. My approach is somewhat like a pilot program—starting with a trial period to gauge compatibility. Here are three critical aspects I focus on when evaluating potential colleagues: 1. Working Style: Understanding your time preferences, quirks, flexibility, and non-negotiables is essential. We all have different ways of working, and finding common ground can lead to a more harmonious team dynamic. 2. Response to Crises: Startups are often about putting out fires while serving customers. I’m curious about how you handle high-pressure situations. Your behavior in crises speaks volumes about your character and resilience. 3. Long-Term Vision: I want to ensure we share a similar long-term vision. We’re not just building a product; we’re creating a culture that will endure. Ultimately, being part of a startup is a journey filled with unpredictability. Aligning on values and working styles can make that journey much more rewarding.
