  • This National Hispanic Heritage Month, we recognize and celebrate Hispanic Americans and their contributions to our country, including the sacrifices they have made, such as the namesake of Bath-built DDG 115, Rafael Peralta. He joined the Marine Corps and fought in Operation Iraqi Freedom. On Nov. 15, 2004, Sgt. Peralta was heavily engaged in the second Battle of Fallujah – successfully clearing six houses with his squad. He came under fire at the seventh house and was severely wounded. A grenade was thrown near his head and without hesitation, Sgt. Peralta pulled the grenade to his body to absorb the blast. He heroically gave his life to save his fellow Marines and protect the country he loved. In the last letter Sgt. Peralta wrote to his brother from Iraq, it read, “Be proud of me, bro…and be proud of being an American.” #HispanicHeritageMonth #USNavy

  • In honor of today being recognized in Maine as Indigenous People’s Day, it’s worth noting some of the words we use every day are names which were given by the region’s original inhabitants. For example, the town opposite Bath on the Kennebec River is named "Arrowsic" which comes from the Abenaki word "Arrowseag," which means "place of obstruction." This refers to Upper Hell Gate on the Sasanoa River, which was filled with boulders and ledges until the Army Corps of Engineers widened it in 1898 and 1908. It’s not always clear what indigenous word led to the word currently in use. According to Maine: An Encyclopedia, the origin of Seguin Island just outside the mouth of the Kennebec is elusive. One explanation is that it resembles a tortoise, called siguenoc among some indigenous people. Or it means “alone out to sea” from the Algonquin segunau. Or it could be simpler still: in Abnaki, sigan means hump. #IndigenousPeoplesDay #Maine

  • Did you know? 💭 In the early 2000s, the History Channel aired a weekly show called Guts & Bolts, which provided a behind the curtain look at the history and inner workings of today’s technology. In 2004, the show’s host and producer paid a visit to BIW and captured highlights in various areas of our shipyard, including our cranes, blast and paint, the transporter and Structural Fab. #BIW #FastFact #BathIronWorks
