  • Did you know? 💭 Both the great-great-grandniece and the great-great-grandnephew of Father John Francis Laboon (1921–1988), namesake of Bath-built DDG 58 and recipient of the Silver Star in World War II, have been baptized in the bell of the USS Laboon. Using the ship's bell as a baptismal font is an old naval tradition dating back hundreds of years. Baptisms with a ship's bell were important because the vessels were considered to be sovereign territory. Ceremonies conducted for babies born at sea or in foreign ports usually granted them citizenship. Today, these ceremonies are seen as signs of good luck for the ship. The babies’ names are engraved in the bell. After the ship is decommissioned, the bell may be given to the child whose name is listed first.

  • On Thursday evening, Brandon Glazier, Director of Manufacturing, inspired SkillsUSA Maine students at the competition's opening ceremony with his personal story of discovering in middle school that he wanted to work with metal for a career. He told the students that their education and skills will bring future success because of the positive choices they have already made while still in high school. SkillsUSA plays a pivotal role in shaping these future leaders. As an integral part of Career and Technical Education (CTE) instruction, the organization provides students with opportunities to develop essential skills. We salute SkillsUSA Maine for its role in shaping future leaders, and we congratulate all the students competing this week in Bangor!

This childcare project includes the redevelopment of a property on 6 Farley Road near Cooks Corner in Brunswick, with 120 spaces in the new facility set aside for the children of BIW employees. In total, including the Bath YMCA facility, there will be 150 childcare slots available to the children of BIW employees. The facility is projected to open in September 2025. We are honored to speak amongst industry experts and business leaders on innovative strategies to support working parents and drive economic growth in Maine.
