I’m Wendell, the founder and CEO of Be A Geek, and that’s me in the 8th grade. The year was 1995, and many of the kids I knew wanted to be like Mike (IYKYK), but I had dreams of becoming an engineer and loved learning about the inner workings of gadgets and gizmos. The late 90s were the dawn of the tech revolution, and the word “geek” had the potential to take on a whole new meaning. I came up with an idea for a program called “Be A Geek” for kids who, like me, were proud to be labeled geeky. Fast forward to today, Be A Geek, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit whose mission is to encourage and enable Black students and professionals to pursue and excel in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers. Our vision is a world where everyone has an equal opportunity to pursue their STEM dreams and beyond. How, you ask? We’re working to make geeks cool and celebrate Black STEM experts. We’re also working on an app that will make it easy for parents and educators to find and register K-12 students for nearby STEM programs. When we launch the app later this year in select cities, you’ll be able to create a profile, find and register for STEM programs nearest you, chat with Gizmo, our AI mascot, and message STEM program organizers. Today, on #Give828, as part of #BlackPhilanthropyMonth, we’re seeking donations to fund the development and release of the app. Our goal is to launch in select cities this Fall, with a full launch in 2025.
