Today, Springfield Mayor Dominic Sarno and Superintendent Lawrence Akers announced the launch of Project HOPE 2.0 through funding to the Springfield Police Department from the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health for Crisis Intervention Training (CIT). BHN is grateful to provide behavioral health support for this important initiative. BHN Program Manager Hallie Beth Hollister and Senior Vice President Kathy Mague joined Mayor Sarno, Superintendent Akers, Lieutenant Brian Elliot, and Director of Housing Gerry McCafferty for the announcement. Project HOPE 2.0 is a coordinated effort involving the Springfield Police Department, Behavioral Health Network, Trinity Health’s healthcare services for the homeless, CHD’s rapid rehousing program, and the City of Springfield’s homeless outreach teams. Project Hope 2.0 aims to assist homeless individuals, especially those panhandling, in accessing essential services for health, safety, and stability. Teams of BHN clinical workers and police conduct evening outreach in areas like the riverfront, parks, along the railroad tracks, and behind buildings. Clinicians encourage individuals to seek help while police ensure safety. A full-time social worker in the police department provides follow-up support and referrals. Congratulations to Mayor Sarno and Superintendent Akers and thank you to Hallie Beth Hollister and her team for their leadership!

This afternoon, Springfield City Hall hosted a ceremony celebrating Toni Hendrix, BHN Vice President of Human Resources, as Springfield’s Veteran of the Year. The Veteran of the Year Award is given on an annual basis to a Springfield resident who is a veteran and continuously volunteers their personal time to better our community and never seeks recognition for the work they’ve done. Notably, Toni is only the fourth woman to receive this honor in the 38-year history of the award. Mayor Sarno also declared today “Toni D. Hendrix Day” in Springfield! Congratulations Toni and thank you for your service! Learn more: bit.ly/40yO1zp

This summer, BHN launched a mobile methadone clinic in Ware to expand access to treatment for those in need. With over 2,000 opioid overdose deaths in the state last year, it's crucial to provide support in rural areas. Learn more in this New England Public Media article. As part of BHN's full continuum of addiction and recovery services, BHN operates four Opioid Treatment Program clinics in Springfield, Holyoke, Greenfield, and Orange, as well as a mobile methadone program in Ware. For more information visit https://lnkd.in/g7s35a5r or call 413-301-WELL (9355).
Methadone is stigmatized but works well for many addiction patients. Why is it so hard to get?
