At the Benioff Ocean Science Laboratory, we recognize the deep abuses committed as a result of systemic racism, white privilege, and environmental injustice. We believe in taking concrete steps towards a more equitable and inclusive approach to address the problems facing our oceans and communities. Over the last few years, we have thoughtfully mapped out our commitment to promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ) in our field of marine science. We proactively strive to bring the voices, intellect, and talents of people of all colors, backgrounds, and identities into our work to further science and conservation. Therefore, we commit to taking tangible actions to achieve our vision of a more diverse and inclusive organization. Our DEIJ action plan details these commitments and the steps we must take to achieve them. As an organization and as individuals, it is our responsibility to continually grow our understanding and efforts to help create a more just and equitable future. We are sharing our DEIJ action plan with you, our colleagues, partners, and friends, to hold ourselves accountable to this mission and to make it available as a resource for others striving towards a shared vision. The internship will have full-stack engineering work consisting of API development, data infrastructure buildout, and front-end user interface implementation. UC Santa Barbara's Jenn Caselle and Douglas McCauley are studying sharks' impact on marine ecosystems and exploring strategies to recover their roles, which are declining due to various factors. Exciting new collaborative research involving scientists from the Benioff Ocean Science Laboratory reveals the diverse and crucial roles sharks play in maintaining healthy oceans. However, shark populations are rapidly plummeting under threats of overfishing, climate change, habitat loss, and more. With the great power of technology comes an obligation to use it for good. These days when we talk about technology it’s so often speculation as to whether AI will save us or destroy us. It’s nice when we get to see technology playing a role in the world we can all agree is good. The Economist recently covered the growing success of Whale Safe, an organization using acoustic buoys to alert ships to whale movements to prevent fatal collisions. Our impact on the environment needs to be front and center of our business decisions. Sustainability isn’t just a buzzword. SharkEye uses artificial intelligence (#AI) to monitor great white sharks populations, keeping local communities informed and contributing to conservation research. 🌊 🦈 “Automating shark detection … can (also) be really helpful for a lot of communities outside of ours here in California...
