Very excited to attend another Speaker Series from AIA Middle Tennessee today. Their new event space at the Frist Art Museum in Nashville is great. Today we'll be hearing from Barbara Bestor, FAIA, founder of Bestor Architecture. Bestor is a leading firm in Los Angeles, and the work I've seen from them is nothing short of excellent. On our website, we've excerpted Mimi Zeiger's essay from The State of Housing Design 2023! Edited by Sam Naylor, RA, Daniel D’Oca, and Chris Herbert Published by the Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies, jointly affiliated with Harvard Kennedy School and the GSD Purchase through Harvard University Press The essay discusses replacing single-family standalone homes with multifamily townhouses, duplexes, and semi-detached structures rather than large apartment buildings, which are often viewed with suspicion by neighborhood residents. This strategy is referred to in the book as "disguised density," but others have written about the concept using terminology such as "stealth" or "gentle" density. "With each [term]," writes Mimi Zeiger, "language is used to deflect the fears and misconceptions that have accumulated around multifamily housing—biases that align multiunit buildings with the past specters of bleak public housing projects." https://hgsd.us/4aVhN40
