Architecture Week 2025 is April 13-19! This event is near and dear to my heart, as one of my AIA staff VP roles found me serving as the internal lead for the AIA’s sesquicentennial in 2007. Overall, AIA150 was an unprecedented effort to greatly enhance the public’s understanding of the power of architecture and, in so doing, create a lasting legacy for the American Institute of Architects. One of AIA150’s most significant initiatives, Architecture Week, launched April 8-14, 2007 as a weeklong public outreach celebration spotlighting the role of architects and the part of architecture in enhancing livability, elevating well-being, and enriching quality of life (my words). Architecture Week endures as one of those “lasting legacies” and has become increasingly impactful over the years, particularly through strong programming and community engagement by our state and local components. While the numbers would be difficult to track, imagine the hundreds of thousands of Americans who have learned more about our profession’s profound influence on the human experience through these hundreds of Architecture Week events. At the national level, Architecture Week has had many iterations over the years, but the AIA’s re-energized approach in 2024 was a huge success! Our professional society hopes to build on this momentum by continuing the focus on K-12 initiatives that support existing chapter programming while providing tools for anyone interested in sharing architecture with young people. *March Strategic Council Update* The Moderators and several representatives from the Council attended the The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Leadership Summit in Washington, DC, from February 24-26. We joined the AIA Knowledge Community Leadership Retreat, where we participated in an active workshop to iterate and develop ideas for how AIA can use human-centered design to meet member needs focused on the three 2025 AIA Board priorities of Climate & Resilience, Advancing Technology, and Equitable Community Development. At Leadership Summit, Councilor’s Leah Bayer AIA, NOMA, NCARB and Illya Azaroff, FAIA kicked off the opening Keynote with President Evelyn Lee FAIA in a panel discussion about the evolving practice of architecture. For our Bethune Fellows (all past Council members): please be sure to fill out the survey recently sent to you to help our special projects group define ways to ‘Celebrate a Decade of Impact: Reflections on the Legacy and Future of the AIA Strategic Council.’ The full council convened virtually on March 5th for our spring Council Assembly where we heard updates from all seven study groups and our CACE, AIAS, NAC, and YAF liaisons. Study groups were encouraged to identify areas of overlap, opportunities for collaboration, and new ideas sparked by hearing the other’s groups updates. We are looking forward to our Council updates during the upcoming AIA Leadership Exchange Calls and our next in-person Council assembly at AIA25 in Boston this summer.
