We encourage everyone to read this important reflection from our CEO Peg Dierkers about recent local and national decisions regarding the criminalization of homelessness! ~~~~~~~~ Three days after the City of Cincinnati announced an $83,000 settlement with the Greater Cincinnati Homeless Coalition to not criminalize outdoor sleeping areas, the United States Supreme Court ruled in Grant Pass v. Johnson that cities have the right to prohibit people from sleeping outside. There has been plenty of commentary in the ensuing days about whether people should have the right to sleep outside. I want to state unequivocally that I celebrate our city’s agreement to decriminalize sleeping outdoors. It is a crucial step in the right direction.

Unstable housing affects all ages. For kids, experiencing homelessness can greatly affect their mental health down the road. "The absence of a safe and secure shelter creates 'chronic and unrelenting' stress for the parents or caregivers, which is then picked up by kids, as well." says Rahil Briggs, national director of Healthy Steps. Bethany House serves as a steppingstone to accessible housing for low-income families as well as provides mental and behavioral health programs to the families in our shelter. https://lnkd.in/er2bjRMF #cincinnati #ohio #volunteer #donate #community #service #dogood
