The Earned Income Tax Credit is one of the most effective anti-poverty tax policies in the United States. This program provides a stable pathway out of poverty for working adults and their families. The credit is offered in three phases: A phase-in period where the credit is increased as workers earn more money, a plateau phase where the credit is held constant as employees continues to earn more, and a phase-out period where the credit amount is slowly reduced as an individual earns more. This gradual credit reduction helps ensure economic stability while incentivizing success in the workplace.
