Tracy Evans, the CEO of CapturePoint LLC, was a featured panelist at Wood Mackenzie’s Houston CCUS Conference on October 9, 2024, where he discussed the immediate potential of developing regional deep underground carbon storage hubs in the United States. He noted one of the key challenges was combatting misinformation, but advancing the lessons learned from over 50 years of CO2 capture and storage experience along with our current knowledge of best materials, best engineering and design, and best practices, the industry is poised to deliver on the promise of significant projects in the next year or two.  Tracy also encouraged prompt regulatory review within the rigorous standards of EPA’s Class VI permits, and confirmed that CapturePoint LLC’s Central Louisiana Regional Carbon Hub (CENLA Hub) has sufficient carbon transportation and storage agreements with a subsidiary of Energy Transfer (which also includes CO2 captured from certain holdings of Expand Energy) as well as 2 major projects in the Port of Caddo-Bossier – Bia Energy LLC’s Low-Carbon Methanol facility and Heirloom’s Direct Air Capture facilities – to seriously consider planning for expansion of the intended CENLA Hub CO2 pipeline network in order to serve the carbon management needs of customers in other areas of Louisiana. #CapturePoint #CCUS #CarbonManagement

  • The Methanol Institute recently conducted a comprehensive study by Jeroen Dierickx, Ph.D. that offers additional evidence that upcoming EU regulations will boost the economic value of methanol in the shipping industry worldwide. This study effectively highlights the rising need for low-carbon methanol projects, such as Bia Energy, to help drive the transition to a sustainable maritime industry.

EU policies favor low-carbon fuels, positioning 𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙤𝙡 as a leading player in the energy transition. This what a 🆕 study by Jeroen Dierickx, Ph.D. for the Methanol Institute shows, providing a clear roadmap for the maritime sector as it moves towards net-zero. 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬: 🔅 𝘙𝘦𝘨𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺 𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴 and costs: #FuelEUMaritime Regulation & #EUETS impose heavy penalties on fossil fuel use. Costs for non-compliance with FuelEU Maritime will skyrocket from €39/ton in 2025 to €1,997/ton by 2050. 🔅 Compliance options: To avoid these penalties, vessel owners can choose bio- or e-methanol, or blends of fossil and green methanol as viable compliance options and support the development of a sustainable methanol supply chain. 🔅 𝘗𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘦 𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘴: The analysis forecasts the average maximum price for bio-methanol to be €1,193 per ton from 2025-2050. For e-methanol, prices are estimated at €2,238 per ton from 2025-2033, decreasing to €1,325 per ton from 2034-2050 when the reward factor for using renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBO) expires in 2034. Including EU ETS costs, these prices rise by €150 per ton for both fuels. 🔅 𝘌𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘤 𝘷𝘪𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺: Both bio- and e-methanol show immense potential under these regulations, promoting their adoption and investment in green fuel solutions.
