"Serious financial research demands depth, nuance, and a deep understanding of historical context." Explore how Bigdata.com works with Chief Strategy Officer, Aakarsh Ramchandani. ⬇️
I've dreamt of building something like Bigdata.com for over 10 years. First try, failed (startup called ideations.io) Second try, failed (Doc Screening @ FactSet) Third try, failed (Internal Query Engine @ ThirdPoint, pre-LLMs) Maybe 4th time's the charm? Looking forward to all the feedback (please be nice)

We’re officially launching Bigdata.com today, a web-based platform that will provide investors with many of the sophisticated tools professionals have used for decades. The features include the ability to detect and chart sentiment based on news and other information that Wall Street quants use in complex models. It’s this kind of “big data” that gives the pros an edge. Our timing reflects both fundamental changes in technology – such as the emergence of generative AI – and the enormous growth of discretionary brokerage accounts. We now have the ability to serve a whole new group of individuals with transparent, accurate and auditable features. It’s our biggest initiative since we founded RavenPack more than two decades ago. Our mission then was to provide data analytics to hedge funds. Now, we’re extending to a larger group. First, some perspective. RavenPack, the company I co-founded in 2003, was started with the then-revolutionary idea that an analysis of high-quality news could provide insights into investor sentiment about stocks. We partnered with Dow Jones to deliver on that promise. News sentiment was one of the “factors” quants included in complex equations, along with other fundamental data about earnings and movements in share prices. This “quantamental” strategy has been a key driver in the success of hedge funds such as Millenium and Citadel. A good example of how helpful it can be was illustrated by the recent divergence between ASML Holdings and NVIDIA. Both shares had gained on enthusiasm for semiconductors. In May, however, we saw ASML sentiment wane while Nvidia held steady. One of the things we’ve learned is that absolute sentiment matters less than change. We also know that stocks have a natural positive bias which is explained by the fact that press releases originate from companies and tend to influence the data. That’s why the sudden shift to negative sentiment was so significant. By July, shares of ASML started to tumble. Nvidia, meanwhile, has continued to gain. We believe Bigdata will help democratize access to data in large part because the tool can be used with simple, natural language queries. No coding required. Bigdata can do a wide range of scenario analysis. Our clients are leveraging the system to analyze which companies may do better under a Trump presidency versus a Harris victory Bigdata already incorporates data for news, filings, earnings calls, estimates, prices, and job numbers. Soon, we will widen our scope to incorporate alternative data sources like consumer behavioral trends, satellite imagery analysis, and geolocation insights. According to Statistica, 62% of Americans have a brokerage account, up from 52% in 2016. We believe investors shouldn’t have to turn to Reddit or other social media posts for ideas. We know the most savvy are those with the best data. With Bigdata.com, that is what we intend to give them.
