Our prime focus is helping our communities strive for Zero Waste by developing community based, circular economy solutions. Big Reuse: - diverts building materials, furniture and homegoods from the landfill at our reuse center - hosts green job training programs - operates the Compost Project hosted by Big Reuse to create compost for street trees and community gardens from NYC's organics waste stream - activates hundreds of volunteers to help green NYC - provides outreach for NYC's organics collection program reaching over 100,000 residents a year.

NYC Mayor Adams announced citywide budget cuts this week. DSNY proposed cutting 100% of funding for community composting projects and compost outreach at Big Reuse and 9 other organizations as part of their cuts. This would be devastating for us. Big Reuse relies on this funding to run our community composting sites, curbside composting outreach, and food scrap drop offs. If the funding is not restored - 9 outreach and 10 community composting Big Reuse staff will lose their jobs, in total 115 green jobs in NYC will be eliminated. We may not be able to continue to operate our composting sites and to provide free compost to over 400 NYC parks, community gardens and street tree care events. Just as curbside collection is launching, we will have to end our outreach efforts that connect with over 100,000 New Yorkers to educate about composting. The proposed cuts still need to go through City Council approval by the end of November, so we have some time to make our voices heard and oppose these budget cuts. Please support us by: 1. Approximately half of landfill gas emissions are methane, which has a greater climate change impact than carbon dioxide. The waste sector accounts for around 20% of human-related methane emissions. Landfills are a priority area for developing and identifying better technologies for measuring and mitigating methane and other emissions due to the significant global warming and health effects of these emissions. We awarded $4.6M for research to measure and mitigate these emissions. Our EPA-funded projects will improve understanding of how landfill emissions may change in future climate conditions. Grantees will produce cost-effective sensors and models to support the future of landfill emission mitigation and management. https://lnkd.in/eGkf_WKG

For generations, Fresh Kills Landfill was an eyesore in Staten Island, a landfill so large it was said to be visible from space. Following one of the nation's biggest environmental cleanup projects, the landscape is transformed. Freshkills North Park is now open to the public. What you'll see now instead of garbage: a restored grassland, rolling hills, waterways, cycling paths, a natural refuge, bird viewing towers. This first part of the park is now clean, safe, and ready for you to visit.
