Some of the most talented civics and history students in America traveled to Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., earlier this month to explore civics, democracy, and America’s unique story. The week was the capstone event for the Bill of Rights Institute’s elite Student Fellowship program, a six-month educational program that helps high school students develop as leaders and develop skills in building civil society. The Student Fellows enjoyed a robust itinerary in Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., during their trip. Each day incorporated specific themes, including leadership and the roles of government, the individual, and the entrepreneur in civil society. Benjamin Franklin and Abraham Lincoln have a new home at the Bill of Rights Institute – thanks to the generosity of Print & Graphic Communications Association in support of the Power of the Printed Word Initiative! The Print & Graphic Communications Association, which represents the printing and graphics industry for New York state, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware, recently donated a more than 100-year-old bust of Franklin and a 125-year-old piece of stone lithography artwork depicting Lincoln to BRI’s headquarters. To read more about their generous donations, visit https://lnkd.in/ee2NUT42. The Power of the Printed Word Initiative ensures every student has access to a pocket Constitution, fostering a generation of informed and engaged citizens. Interested in supporting? We had the opportunity to catch up with Caroline Gao, the Grand Prize winner of BRI's 2023 MyImpact Challenge civic engagement contest. Listen to Caroline describe her nonprofit, The World in Us, a youth-to-youth cultural education organization, and the ways in which MyImpact Challenge helped her to connect concepts like citizenship skills and civic virtues to her work. “These are foundational skills and ways of thinking that I don’t think I would have internalized nearly as much as I have now if not for the MyImpact Challenge,” Gao said. https://lnkd.in/ebyqpN3X. A MyImpact Challenge award winner provides free research training to high school students. Grace Liu turned her passion for academic research into an opportunity to help underrepresented populations have access to that same content. Liu, a student at Syosset High School in Syosset, N.Y., created Research to Empower (ReTE), a nonprofit organization that makes free research training available to all students – particularly students from underrepresented backgrounds.
