Taking the day off? We encourage you to reflect with us on this #IndigenousPeoplesDay — especially if you're in New York City... or 'Lenapehoking', the ancestral land of the Lenape. Local indigenous history and stories give special urgency to our work at Billion Oyster Project — to restore even a fraction of what was lost due to colonization. As New Yorkers residing on taken lands, it's our shared responsibility learn from this brutal history, listen to our indigenous neighbors, and help restore our damaged ecosystems for future generations. We've done this before. Humans can be effective stewards of the land when we work with our natural environment, and there is hope in knowing that through recognition and restoration, we can begin to repair that relationship. In doing so, uplifting indigenous voices in our circles is crucial. Head to our blog on acknowledgment for more, but don’t stay there — explore the list of resources, like Native Land (https://native-land.ca/) which maps historical lands and provides tools for conservationists and non-native people to self-educate. Restoring oyster reefs to New York Harbor through public education initiatives
About us
Billion Oyster Project is a nonprofit restoring oyster reefs to New York Harbor through public education initiatives. Oyster reefs have the power to transform NY Harbor. They provide habitat for hundreds of marine species, filter water, and can help shield NYC shorelines from storm damage. Since its founding in 2014, Billion Oyster Project has reintroduced 122 million oysters, engaging 8,000+ students, 15,000+ volunteers, and 70+ NYC restaurant partners. The project’s hands-on science and restoration curriculum is taught at 70+ schools across the city. The Urban Assembly New York Harbor School, a maritime high-school located on Governors Island, is the flagship school of the Billion Oyster Project. Harbor School students contribute to Billion Oyster Project as part of their Career and Technical Education (CTE) experience—growing oysters, designing and building oyster reef structures, diving to monitor reefs, operating boats, performing marine biology research, and more. We’re deeply grateful to House Majority Leader Hon. Hakeem Jeffries for joining us today at Paerdegat Basin in #Canarsie, Brooklyn, to present $968,000 in funding for Billion Oyster Project’s expansion of the reef's 480,000 oyster deployment in 2019. This event was a powerful reminder of the importance of community-driven environmental efforts. Paerdegat Basin, home to NYC’s Black-owned boat club and longtime site partners, Paerdegat Yach Club, holds a significant place in the history of Canarsie and the wider Brooklyn community. It’s an honor to work with and learn from our neighbors who’ve preserved their practice of stewardship. With the support of leaders like Hakeem Jeffries, we’re making strides toward a more resilient New York Harbor. Leader Jeffries’ focus on community-based environmental projects is vital to the success of initiatives like ours. Together, we’re not just restoring our waters; we’re revitalizing the communities that depend on and deserve to enjoy them. Thank you to everyone who attended, and especially to Paerdegat Yacht Club for their continued partnership. #BillionOysterProject #HakeemJeffries #CommunityEngagement #EnvironmentalJustice #PaerdegatBasin #Brooklyn
