Billy’s Place has been so fortunate to be growing across the valley with our Grief Informed Schools program! Our 6-hr grief group curriculum trainings, empathy presentations and ongoing school support have been so well received that we wanted to make sure our mission could continue with funding to back it. We are so thankful for our new partnership with the Tempe Diablos for granting us $10,000 to allow us to expand our current Tempe school collaboration. Not only did we get to attend their Celebrate Giving event at the Desert Botanical Garden this week, but we were able to welcome them as well as the Tempe Union/Care7 team that we support in their schools, to our Billy’s Place office for a tour❤️ Thank You Diablos!!

People ask us, "Who are grief groups for?" We believe that grief groups can be for anyone. Loss impacts everyone differently, and we don't want anyone to feel alone in their grief. Sometimes, just being around people who 'get it' when it comes to reliving memories and processing emotions makes all the difference. If your child has lost someone special and you're curious whether our grief groups are the right fit, don't hesitate to reach out. We will be here for you 💜

A couple days ago my colleague and fellow Sundt Construction employee-owner Leena Patel and I went for a drive to bring lunch and hang out with the staff at Billy's Place in Peoria,Arizona. Billy’s Place was founded by Juli McGreal when she and her sons lives were changed forever by the unexpected and unfortunate loss of her husband Mike. Billy's Place is a tribute to children and families whos lives will be forever changed and challenged by the death of their loved ones. At Billy's Place, they are proud to provide assistance to children and their families while they cope with loss by providing comfort and companionship, no matter where they are on their journey. Through support groups, special events, and a community of people who ‘get it,’ they help families rediscover moments of happiness without guilt and nurture these moments as signs of hope for more promising days ahead. I only wish I had a place like Billys when I lost so many loved ones when growing up. Over a quick meal with the company of these like-hearted and wonderful people, we laughed a little and we cried a little together as we shared stories from our pasts of our own lives and our personal loss and truly bonded. This time was well spent as we were able to build stronger relationships and plan our future partnership between SUNDT FOUNDATION and Billy’s Place. Judi's House/JAG Institute, using the Childhood Bereavement Estimation Model (CBEM), explored changes in U.S. bereavement rates due to a parent’s accidental overdose death from 2002 to 2022. For children under the age of 18, bereavement estimates increased 3.5 times. In 2002, accidental overdose deaths accounted for 6.5% of the deaths experienced by bereaved children (~15,000).
