  • September's Featured Board Member of the Month is Brennan Wood. She has served as the Executive Director of Dougy Center based in Portland, Oregon since 2015, where she has been on staff in various roles since 2004. Brennan walked through the doors of Dougy Center for the first time in 1987 when her mother, Doris, died three days after she had turned 12-years-old. Her experience in a peer support group at Dougy Center shaped her life and she has strived to provide the same opportunity that she had to other children and families who are grieving ever since. Join us in thanking Brennan for her service on the NACG Board of Directors for 2024! To learn more about Brennan, visit https://lnkd.in/gxu2JNzW.

  • September is National #SuicidePreventionMonth. We can all benefit from honest conversations about mental health, grief, and suicide. To start off the month, we are sharing the 5 steps you can take to help someone having thoughts of suicide. Learn more in the information provided below from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). • • • 5 steps you can take to #BeThe1To help someone who is having thoughts of suicide: ❓ASK: “Are you thinking about suicide?” It’s not an easy question to ask, but it can help start a conversation. Studies show that asking people if they are suicidal does not increase suicidal behavior or thoughts. 👂BE THERE: Listening without judgment is key to learning what the person is thinking and feeling. Research suggests acknowledging and talking about suicide may reduce suicidal thoughts. 💙 HELP KEEP THEM SAFE: Reducing access to highly lethal items or places can help prevent suicide. Asking the person if they have a plan and making lethal means less available or less deadly can help the person stay safe when suicidal thoughts arise. 📞 HELP THEM CONNECT: Connecting the person with the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline  (call or text 988) and other community resources can give them a safety net when they need it. You can also help them reach out to a trusted family member, friend, spiritual advisor, or mental health professional. 🗣️ FOLLOW UP: Staying in touch with the person after they have experienced a crisis or been discharged from care can make a difference. Studies show that supportive, ongoing contact can play an important role in suicide prevention.

  • On International Overdose Awareness Day, we remember those who have died from a substance-use related death and hold space for children, teens, and families who have been impacted by substance use. For children and teens, having someone die from a substance-use related death can be an isolating experience, leaving them with unanswered questions, additional losses, and a wide range of emotions. We have shared some ways to help children and teens impacted by substance use from the NACG Supporting Children Following a Substance-Use Related Death Toolkit. To view the toolkit, visit https://lnkd.in/g_s-ttZg. #TogetherWeCan #IOAD2024 #EndOverdose
