Welcome to #BIOcean5D! A European, multidisciplinary research team exploring life beneath the waves. There’s still much we don’t know about marine biodiversity, despite its fundamental importance in planetary and human health. Recent research shows how little we understand the abundance, function and dynamics of marine life, and the exceptional rate they’re changing due to human activities. BIOcean5D seeks to explore marine life and how it changes across 5 dimensions: 3-dimensional space, time, and human impact. Over 4 years, we’ll be holistically exploring marine biodiversity and developing novel tools and methods to monitor and understand its functions and its value. Our researchers span 31 partners across 11 countries. In collaboration with #EMBLtrec and the Tara vessel (Fondation Tara Océan), we’re collecting samples and exploring marine life – from viruses to whales – along the entire European seascape from Finland to Crete. Ultimately, we hope that by measuring, monitoring and understanding marine biodiversity, we’ll be able to inform the sustainable management and long-term preservation of our marine ecosystems. Follow us for research updates, scientific and engagement opportunities and ways to get involved across Europe! #marinebiodiversity #teamscience #collaboration #marinescience #marineconservation #biodiversity #research

📢 Paper Alert 📢 Copepods are the major component of marine zooplankton. They are very tiny (< 10mm) yet essential players in aquatic food webs. What if I told you that these tiny sea creatures influence how marine ecosystems function—and that climate change might be altering their contribution? 🌊 🐋 I am very excited to share our latest study in Global Change Biology, where we explore how copepod functional diversity (FD) shapes marine ecosystems—and how climate change might be disrupting these dynamics. In this study, we combined species distribution models with functional trait data and indicators of ecosystem health to investigate: 🔹 How different aspects of copepod FD relate to species richness and ecosystem processes 🔹 Whether a few dominant species may have a disproportionate impact on ecosystem functioning 🔹 How climate change is projected to make copepod traits more homogeneous worldwide, potentially reducing mesozooplankton biomass and weakening the ocean’s carbon cycle 🚨 Our study highlights the need to integrate FD into biodiversity assessments to better understand how ecosystems respond to global change Check out the full paper here: https://lnkd.in/eDMaSJF6 🙏 This work received support from the AtlantECO Project and the BIOcean5D project. A huge thanks to Jonas Wydler, my collaborators from the Environmental Physics (UP) Group as well as all contributors involved in (decades) of plankton sampling who made essential data available through public biodiversity information systems. You made this research possible!

🧬 Environmental DNA (#eDNA) is a powerful method of genetic analysis that provides information about the species present, both now and in the past, from the detection of DNA traces in a sample 🤝 The Ocean Biomolecular Observing Network (OBON) works to coordinate and promote marine #eDNA monitoring around the world 🌍 An initiative of the Partnership for Observation of the Global Ocean (POGO) that brings the major ocean research institutions of the world together to implement an international and integrated global ocean observing system 🇪🇺 European initiatives to study and monitor biodiversity changes at the land-sea interface by #eDNA - in particular by BIOcean5D, OBAMA-NEXT Project and #TREC – were highlighted by Raffaele Siano at the 26th POGO Annual Meeting (#POGO26) in Penang (Malaysia) 🌊 With this increased visibility, we hope that our work contributes to the worldwide collective effort to understand and preserve our ocean 🇪🇺 BIOcean5D is co-funded by the European Union (Horizon Europe) | EU Science, Research and Innovation

💡 Knowledge is Power 🌊 The final morning of the European Ocean Days last week was dedicated to gathering Europe’s marine knowledge. This robust foundation is a crucial element for the preparation of the #EuropeanOceanPact, a reference framework for all EU ocean-related policies ▶️ Marine Knowledge for the Ocean Pact was opened by Charlina Vitcheva (DG Maritime Affairs & Fisheries, EC), ▶️ Claire Jolly (OECD) followed with a keynote speech highlighting that “a sustained marine data flow keeps costs down; investing in marine data means lower costs for businesses and consumers” ▶️ The first panel, dedicated to Ocean Observation for the Ocean Pact, was then opened by Andreea Strachinescu, (DG Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, EC), we were reminded during the discussion that "a healthy ocean is a productive ocean" by Nicolas Pade (EMBRC - European Marine Biological Resource Centre) ▶️ Fabio Pirotta (DG Environment, EC) introduced the second panel and discussion focused on Marine Data for the Ocean Pact, ▶️ Followed by Elisabeth Hamdouch (DG Defence, Industry and Space, EC) for the final panel on EU DTO: Integrating Marine Knowledge for a sustainable and competitive Europe ▶️ Closing words from Elisabetta Balzi (Head of Unit on Oceans, Seas and Waters, DG Research & innovation, EC) concluded that “marine knowledge ensures that policies are efficient, impactful and grounded in reality” 📸 Amandine Nunes-Jorge 🇪🇺 BIOcean5D is co-funded by the European Union (Horizon Europe) #HorizonEU #Climate #EUMissions #MissionOcean #EU4Ocean
