Hard to believe it’s been 23 years since 9/11 became more than just another day. Even harder to believe this generation has been joining a peacetime military for over three years already. If you’re a #gwotveteran like us, chances are you’ve spent your post-military life: 1) grateful you made it through alive and 2) giving everything you’ve got to your current job or business in honor of the opportunity you’ve been given for this long and prosperous life. Also, if you’re like us, you find it all too easy to get so laser focused on outcomes… Chasing opportunities, putting out fires, celebrating wins… That you almost forget why you got in the game in the first place. We’re human. It happens. But that’s why we at Black Powder Search baked our “why” right into our name. “Black Powder” is more than a play on military jargon… It’s a reminder of who we work for. Take Don, a #specialoperations #veteran in Black Powder Search’s talent pool. One of his biggest wins as a #greenberet was the time he reduced a planning-to-execution timeline from nine months to six weeks. You read that right: it took nine months to plan and execute even a simple project. Don was on temporary assignment at a US embassy in Southeast Asia. All members of the team were on six-month rotations… And with everyone there for the short-term, few took ownership of their roles - they rotated in, did their job, then moved on. Fighting an insanely long planning cycle would likely eat up an entire rotation (so most assumed)… So instead of fighting it they absorbed it as an operational norm. They gave alternating rotations the unofficial moniker of either “planning” or “execution”… Where one rotation would create a plan, then the following rotation executed the plan created by the previous rotation. And if you had the misfortune to land a planning rotation? Well…too bad for you. Sounds awful, doesn’t it? Don thought so, too. But Don was taught never to tear down a wall until he knew why it was built in the first place… So rather than burn it all down, he reached out to all seven stakeholder reps with a simple question: “Why does it take your office upwards of 90 days to approve our plans?” And the answers he got shocked him. To a person, all seven reps responded with, “I’m sorry, who are you?” 😆 So many assumptions over the years by Don’s colleagues as to why those rotations were organized like they were… Everything from “Title X requirements” to “General Officer mandates” (none of which anyone could ever provide as evidence). When in truth, Don’s office had simply fallen out of touch with the stateside team that managed those embassy missions. Don gave himself what he described as “the forehead slap heard ‘round the world”… Then reintroduced himself and his team to the stakeholders, and in less than two months, had approval for his first plan… Which his team got to execute. Then they did it again. And again. And again as many times as their six months allowed. And before he rotated home they’d accomplished more in their one rotation than the previous five “execution” rotations had, combined. All because Don a) questioned assumptions, and b) recognized the [simple] solution when it presented itself. Most special operations #leaders succeed not because they’re able to stitch together complex solutions off the top of their head… But because they’re able to recognize the simple, most obvious solution most people overlook. Like most #gwot #veterans today we reflected on the third anniversary of the #Afghanistan withdrawal. It’s hard not to look back on that day and feel all of the feelings, most of them not too terribly positive. What helps us here at Black Powder Search is focusing on what’s next. Continuing the mission here at home, helping veterans and their families live in abundance, making those sacrifices mean something… It helps us turn the pain down a few notches. What works for us won’t work for everyone. Some people need to sit with the anger a bit. That’s ok. Find what works for you and do it. Without shame, without apology.
