About us
Black Women Build – Baltimore is an innovative home ownership initiative that works with Black women to rehabilitate vacant and deteriorated homes while providing support for life-based skills such as financial literacy, counseling, and nutrition all of which promotes social and economic freedom. Black Women Build – Baltimore believes that training women in trades-related work not only provides a tangible set of skills to be used on other jobs and in the home but allows women to make 2-3 times more in wages than traditionally female-centered jobs. We provide a safe and supportive community where women can learn carpentry, electrical, and plumbing during home improvement projects in the Upton and Druid Heights neighborhoods of West Baltimore. Most importantly, we create homeownership opportunities by rehabilitating distressed properties which the participants will own.

A new study by HPM researchers Mudia Uzzi and Keshia Pollack Porter reveals that structural racism, specifically through the lens of racial capitalism, significantly contributes to disparities in firearm violence in urban areas like Baltimore City. The study focused on Baltimore’s census tracts, analyzing firearm violence data from 2015 to 2019. By examining neighborhoods’ exposure to redlining and subprime mortgage lending, the study identified distinct patterns of firearm violence related to these practices. Several local organizations, such as Black Women Build - Baltimore and the Black Butterfly Project, are actively challenging the impacts of racial capitalism by focusing on community-driven development and advocating for equitable policies. As students & teachers head back to the classroom, we were thrilled to support a recent school supply giveaway in Baltimore. 📚📝🎒 More than 250 teachers participated in the event, receiving FREE binders, staplers, paper, markers, pens & more. In all, we distributed 2,550 pounds of supplies donated by a Baltimore area customer. THIS is the circular economy at its best – finding new uses for perfectly good items, rather than dumping them in landfills! And putting smiles on the faces of teachers & students.
