About us

Black Women Photographers disrupts the notion that it is difficult to discover and commission Black and African creatives. Dedicated to providing a resource for the industry’s gatekeepers. Founded by Polly Irungu, and launched in July of 2020, Black Women Photographers (BWP) is a global community, directory, and hub of over 1,500 Black women and non-binary identifying photographers, spanning over 50 countries and 35+ U.S. states. Black Women Photographers is a home for Black women to receive proper recognition, and most importantly, get hired. Dedicated to providing a resource for the industry’s gatekeepers, it supports its members through promoting their work in an active database distributed to photo editors, directors, curators, and art buyers. The collective also offers free educational resources such as regular programing of webinars, workshops, training, and portfolio reviews. Through conversation, workshops, educational resources, virtual and in-person events, as well as an active directory of photographers available for hire, BWP is committed to providing a home for Black women identifying photographers with the aim to increase access to professional and paid opportunities for Black creatives around the world. Fashion and Portrait Photographer | Through my lens, I aim to celebrate diversity, challenge perceptions, and illustrate atypical unity by inviting viewers into a world where every image is a testament.

TBT: It’s been eight months since I sold my first artwork at my very first exhibition at Heaven’s Gallery, which is in the heart of one of the most artistically diverse neighborhoods in Chicago: Wicker Park. I am still filled with that same glow I had that day and to see other black women photographers surround me with their art as well made it all the more impactful. Definitely want to shout out art galleries such as Heaven’s Gallery and organizations such as Black Women Photographers for continuing to create space for black women to show up authentically themselves and give new life to our work. The ability to talk about my work with people OFFLINE was truly transformative. It’s only the beginning. #blackwomenphotographers #chicagophotographer #chicagoartgallery #chicago #BWP

This little “thing” has changed lives. I’m so grateful for the team, and I’m excited to see what impact Black Women Photographers will continue to have in the next four years and beyond. Swipe for a throwback. Context on the throwback: Four years ago, the first initiative I launched with BWP was a COVID-19 relief fund for Black Women Photographers who needed immediate support. The Kelly Clarkson Show noticed BWP's impact and invited me on to discuss the work. #BlackWomenPhotographers #HireBlackWomenPhotographers #photography #linkedinforcreators
