A higher percentage of female attorneys reported experiencing mental and physical health issues last year than their male counterparts did. These results are consistent with those from previous years, yet new survey data from Bloomberg Law suggests that the well-being situation for female attorneys may be improving. The Bloomberg Law Workload and Hours 2024 Wrap-Up Survey asked over 1,000 attorneys about 12 mental, physical, and personal issues they might have faced over the past year. For 10 of the categories, higher percentages of female respondents than male respondents said that they experienced the issue. In five categories—disrupted sleep, anxiety, worsened energy/ability to concentrate, worsened mood, and depression—female respondents led male respondents by at least 10 percentage points. Additionally, while almost a quarter of male respondents (24%) reported experiencing none of the listed issues, only 13% of female respondents said the same. How is AI making a genuine impact in your line of work? To answer this question, we gathered thought leaders across industries at our 'Executive Forum on AI' event. In a panel discussion led by Kerry Lenahan, panelists discussed what businesses should demand from U.S. Congress regarding regulation and legislation around generative AI applications to foster innovation responsibly. We were joined by Tom Quaadman of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and Jason Oxman of the Information Technology Industry Council (ITI). To demonstrate how Bloomberg Industry Group is leveraging AI across its business, Erin Perugini demonstrated AI-powered features and tools across Bloomberg Law, Bloomberg Tax, and Bloomberg Government. The latest Inside Big Law is here: A federal judge froze parts of President Trump’s executive order that threatened government contracts for Perkins Coie clients and banned firm employees from accessing federal buildings. Paul Hastings hired Kirkland M&A leader Eric Schiele who guided some of the biggest deals in recent years. Latham generated $7 billion in revenue last year, citing “high demand” for virtually all of its practices across transactional and litigation groups.

The Trump administration’s latest move to encourage the departures of federal employees is poised to be its most effective as it's more grounded in the law than the earlier deferred resignation proposal that failed to convince enough workers to leave. Federal agencies, including those that oversee health and Social Security, are giving their employees the option to retire early and offering other staff up to $25,000 to leave. These offers differ from the January proposal, called “Fork in the Road,” that federal employment lawyers called legally dubious. Federal agencies have used buyouts in the past to downsize, albeit on a smaller scale. Learn more from Courtney Rozen and Parker Purifoy: https://lnkd.in/eCq9RZ4J

Check out the latest edition of Inside Big Law here: Hogan Lovells passed the $3 million in profits per equity partner mark for the first time by moving retiring and under-performing partners to non-equity status. WilmerHale is bumping up its mandatory in-office days from 3 to 4 days a week. Nominations for our fifth edition of “They’ve Got Next: The 40 Under 40” are due March 14.

The non-equity partner tier has been a part of Big Law for nearly half a century. However, the size and prominence of the non-equity tier has grown substantially, and in recent years has become the norm, not the exception. In our latest video, featuring Justin Henry and Bruce MacEwen, we explain the non-equity partner tier, how it differs from traditional equity partners, how and why the role was created, and how the non-equity partner became the norm in law firms over just a few decades. Finally, we’ll look at the pros and cons of having a non-equity tier for both the firm and the lawyer. Learn more from Andrew Satter and watch the video here: https://lnkd.in/e8rikRNV
