**October is National Estate Planning Awareness Month** The BRCF Pillar Society includes those who have named the BRCF as the beneficiary of any type of planned or deferred gift, and have chosen to be listed as a member of the Society in Foundation publications. 1. Pillar Society membership is self-reported. 2. We do not ask how much is being left to the Foundation. While we encourage donors to discuss their gifts with the Foundation so that we can ensure that any necessary arrangements are made to best comply with their wishes, this is not required. 3. There is no minimum amount needed to be left to the Foundation to be included as a member. 4. Pillar Society members may designate the use of the distributions from their future gifts or may leave the distributions to the discretion of the Foundation’s board of directors. A Pillar Society gift may be used to establish a new named fund (so long as minimum amount requirements are met*) or may be added to any of the Foundation’s existing funds. 5. Pillar Society members are listed in the Foundation’s Annual Report, website, and various publications. We are hopeful that these listings will encourage others to follow the members’ example of generosity and forethought.

BRCF will send all donations to the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina that serves Asheville and surrounding communities. A community foundation often knows first-hand the legitimate organizations and efforts that need immediate support and can quickly distribute funding. Thank you Dr. Whitten for taking the time to meet with us and learn more about Shelby County!
Yesterday, I had the pleasure of visiting the vibrant communities of Johnson and Shelby Counties! I first visited Franklin Community Middle School, where I met with Superintendent David Clendening, an alumnus of Indiana University Bloomington and active member of the Franklin community. We had a great discussion about, among other issues, Franklin Community Schools’ involvement with the Seamless Pathway Program at Indiana University Columbus, which aims to enhance educational opportunities and support for our students. My day also took me to the Blue River Community Foundation (BRCF) in Shelbyville, where I was honored to view the Bill Garrett mural—a beautiful tribute to a legendary IU Hoosier basketball player and Shelbyville native who helped transform American sports as the first Black player to start for a Big Ten team. This mural is part of the BRCF’s “Pride in Place” program, which enriches our community through public art installations. It serves to foster pride and create an inviting atmosphere for both residents and visitors. A special thank you to BRCF Executive Director Jennifer Jones and James Garrett, nephew of Bill Garrett, for joining me in celebrating this remarkable work by local artist Pamela Bliss, another proud Indiana University alumna. Pamela’s murals include the iconic tribute to Reggie Miller in downtown Indianapolis, as well as other notable figures such as John Mellencamp and Kurt Vonnegut. I am inspired by the dedication of our local communities and the innovative programs that connect education with culture. Together, we are shaping a brighter future for our students and enhancing the quality of life in Indiana.
