Today is International Overdose Awareness Day. According to the Penington Institute, the misuse of opioids — often combined with other drugs like benzodiazepines, stimulants, and alcohol — continues to result in a record number of deaths each year. In 2021, an estimated 296 million people, or one in every 17 people aged 15-64, had used a drug in the past 12 months — a 23% increase from 10 years before. Opioids account for more than two-thirds (69%) of drug overdose deaths. The estimated number of people using opioids globally has doubled from 26-36 million people in 2010 to 61.3 million in 2020. CarePoint Health clinicians are doing their part to curb the drug-overdose crisis. Just recently, 20 CarePoint-staffed emergency departments across three states were named to the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) 2023 Emergency Quality Network (E-QUAL) Honor Roll, a select group recognized for outstanding achievements in treating opioid and alcohol use disorder (OUD and AUD). This highly impactful initiative was led by our very own Quality Department — Camille Broadwater, PhD, MPH, Quality Manager; LeGrand Rogers, MD, Risk Manager; Matthew Broadwater-Hollifield, MD, Western Market Chief Medical Officer; and Dylan Luyten, MD, Eastern Market Chief Medical Officer (Article: https://ow.ly/68ao50TbnIA). Also, on International Overdose Awareness Day last year, CarePoint Emergency Medicine Physicians Don Stader, MD, and Ramnik Dhaliwal, MD, JD, joined Colorado Congresswoman Brittany Petterson (7th District) at Swedish Medical Center in Englewood, CO, as Petterson announced a new bill aimed at addressing the opioid epidemic. The bill would require Medicare, Medicaid, and TRICARE to cover the cost of naloxone given to patients upon discharge if they are deemed to be at risk of an opioid overdose. The goal of the bill is to prevent overdose deaths, reduce hospital admissions, and limit financial burden on patients (Article: https://ow.ly/9ZjF50TbnIs). Two of our very own — Vice President of Operations Nicole Kirkweg, MBA, and EMS Medical Director Jeff Beckman, MD — completed the Leadville Trail 100 Run last weekend! As the name implies, the course is 100 miles long! It starts and finishes in Leadville, CO, reaching a peak elevation of 12,600 feet. 🏔️ The true test is the rugged, unrelenting terrain along the way. The course includes steep climbs of high-altitude passes like Sugarloaf as well as technical terrain on the Colorado Trail, all amounting to more than 18,000 feet of elevation gain.
