Our very own Grace Nassim,M.D.,MPH., was the master of ceremonies for the Story Slam event at the American College of Physicians' Annual Scientific Meeting of the Kansas and Missouri Chapters, which took place October 9-11 at The Elms Hotel & Spa in Excelsior Springs, MO. Approximately 60 physicians attended Story Slam, where participants shared inspiring stories about personal and professional experiences. Dr. Nassim kicked off the event with a moving story about her young daughter, who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes a few years ago. "When you think about family and medicine as a topic, I see it as an opportunity to reconnect with the values that brought us all to medicine," Dr. Nassim said as she concluded her story. Jeff Beckman, MD, an award-winning Emergency Medical Services professional who has held EMS leadership positions at the state, regional, and local levels over his 20-year career in medicine, has been named CarePoint Health’s EMS Medical Director! In his new role, Dr. Beckman will work to increase collaboration between EMS providers and doctors in the emergency room and hospital, develop site-specific EMS champions, and build partnerships with agencies transporting patients to CarePoint’s partner facilities. Dr. Beckman originally joined CarePoint in 2003 as an ER physician at Sky Ridge Medical Center (now HCA HealthONE Sky Ridge) and Swedish Medical Center (now HCA HealthONE Swedish). A year later, he joined the Emergency Medicine group at Lutheran and Good Samaritan hospitals, which served as the launching pad for his long and successful EMS career. He spent 16 years at Lutheran and Good Samaritan, serving as EMS Medical Director and the Trauma Service Liaison while overseeing more than 10 EMS agencies over the course of his career there. He ultimately returned home to CarePoint in 2020. Last week, several of our physicians traded in the emergency room for the golf course for a day, convening at Arrowhead Golf Club in Littleton, CO, to play in the South Metro Professional Firefighters Foundation Golf Tournament (SMPFF). CarePoint Health was also a “longest drive” sponsor at the event. The proceeds from the annual tournament go to SMPFF, which provides assistance to Colorado first responders and their families in times of serious illness, injury, or loss of life. Last week, our very own Paige Archey, MD, gave a presentation to students at Regis Jesuit High School in Aurora, CO, as part of the STEMblazers program. A nonprofit organization, STEMblazers aims to inspire young women to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Dr. Archey, an #EmergencyMedicine physician who practices at The Medical Center of Aurora, talked about what it takes to become an ER doctor. She also did a splinting workshop for the students.
