What is the role of an AAC Specialist? Let's talk about it! The role of an AAC Specialist is to help evaluate and support students who require AAC and support their teams in implementing these systems throughout the school day. At the beginning of a student's AAC journey, the AAC Specialist will work with the school team and family to trial various AAC systems and choose the best fit for each student, considering their unique language and motor/access needs. Once a device has been selected, AAC specialists provide training, consulting, troubleshooting, ongoing assistance with IEP goals and accommodations, and so much more. Students who experience this robust level of support are more likely to achieve their communication goals and, most importantly, feel empowered to use their voice. A dedicated AAC specialist has a transformative impact on AAC users academically and socially! What they offer to teachers, teams, and families is more than tools and strategies; it's understanding. #AAC #CommunicationScience #SLP #AACSpecialist

About us
Boothby Therapy Services is a clinician owned company. Maren Boothby, MS, CCC-SLP received her Master's Degree in Communication Disorders from the University of New Hampshire in 1997. After working in skilled nursing, acute rehabilitation and outpatient rehabilitation settings, Maren found her passion working with children in schools. Maren began collaborating with like-minded colleagues in 2002. Our philosophy of providing custom made work schedules designed to fit each individual therapist's life combined with outstanding compensation for each hour worked has allowed us to recruit and retain the highest caliber of therapists. Our understanding of the needs of special education professionals continues to foster an increasing number of partnerships with schools across New England. We partner with teachers and parents to integrate therapy goals into daily routines at school and at home. This unique partnership between therapists, educators and parents is a powerful team that helps children succeed.

Share your most useful AAC tips below. We'll go first! No matter the type of AAC device, optimizing it for the individual using it will help them learn to communicate. Whether it's making fonts bigger, changing background colors, inputting motivating and personalized vocabulary, using key guards, or placing buttons or switches where they are more easily accessed, these customizations will help users navigate the device more effectively. Most importantly, the implementation should be FUN and FUNctional - tap into the student's intrinsic motivations and interests to facilitate communication and language growth. We all want to be able to communicate clearly and easily. This is just one way to make that happen!
