Improving the everyday lives of people living in Puerto Rico.
About us
OUR MISSION Our mission is to improve the everyday lives of people living in Puerto Rico by amplifying the voice of the Puerto Rican Diaspora on the mainland. OUR VISION BoricuActivatEd believes that greater civic engagement by mainland Puerto Ricans will lead to better-informed policies towards Puerto Rico, and result in a higher quality of living for our family and friends on the Island. OUR NAME BORICUACTIVATED “Boricua” is a Spanish word derived from the native Taíno word “Boriken,” (the great land of the valiant and noble Lord), and is often used as a synonym for Puerto Rican. Our name, BoricuActivatEd, encompasses the group we want to reach (“boricuas” on the U.S. mainland), what we want to achieve (“activating” them to amplify their voice) and how we will achieve this goal (“Ed,” through education and community engagement).

Edward James Olmos, our friend and chair of the BoricuActivatEd Hollywood Task Force, was honored recently when the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors declared October 13, 2023 as "Edward James Olmos Day" in order to honor the actor, producer, director, activist, and humanitarian's decades of work in Hollywood and contributions to our culture and the broader Latino community. Born and raised in East L.A., he first gained notoriety in smaller TV roles before breaking through on Broadway in the Tony-award nominated "Zoot Suit" and winning both an Emmy and Golden Globe for his work on the classic 80s series, "Miami Vice." He was nominated for an Academy Award for his work in the classic "Stand and Deliver" and has won numerous awards for roles as diverse as "The Burning Season", about protecting the Amazon rainforest, as Selena's father in the biopic about the famed singer, and as Admiral Adama in the SyFy show "Battlestar Galactica." He has spent his entire career pushing for more diverse opportunities for Latino actors and in 1997 founded the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival. He founded and serves as Chairman of Latino Public Broadcasting, works with at-risk youth in detention centers, and in 2001 spent twenty days in jail while protesting with the people of Puerto Rico to end the Vieques target practice bombings. We are so proud to celebrate our champion, Edward James Olmos, for this incredibly special recognition for an amazing lifetime of work. #HispanicHeritageMonth Jennice Fuentes #EdwardJamesOlmos

On August, BoricuActivatEd had the honor of hosting a #civicengagement intensive in #OrangeCountyCA with @Undergroundgrit! First, we would like to recognize the work that #CrystalAnthony and @suzanne_campbell_ do each and every day to provide a voice to men, women and youth who impacted by the justice system. Today, we are proud to share a video from that training featuring @ocsuparmiento, @avelinovalenciaOC, @senator_umberg, @natalierubalcava4anaheim and, most importantly, Underground GRIT's leadership and the men, women, and youth who have been impacted by our criminal justice system. We congratulate and thank all the participants who bravely stepped forward to share their stories. BoricuActivatEd looks forward to working with them as they continue their advocacy journey! @jennicefuentes @alexjbarr #SoCal #OrangeCountyCA #CivicEngagement #Boricua #undergroundgrit
