About us
The Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) is responsible for conducting the federally required metropolitan transportation planning process for the Boston metropolitan area. The MPO develops the vision for the region and decides how to allocate federal and state transportation funds to programs and projects—roadway, transit, bicycle, and pedestrian—that support that vision. The staff to the Boston Region MPO, the Central Transportation Planning Staff (CTPS), was created in 1974 to develop a permanent resource of expertise in comprehensive, multimodal transportation planning and analysis. CTPS promotes interagency cooperation, ensures consistency among planning efforts, reduces redundancy, and fills gaps in the capabilities of MPO members—thus enabling work for member agencies to be accomplished efficiently and effectively. LinkedIn comments are not considered official public comments to the MPO. Submit an official comment at bostonmpo.org/contact.

Rounaq Basu, our Manager of Multimodal Planning and Design, was recently interviewed by The Bay State Banner newspaper about the MPO's Neutralizing Onerous Heat Effects on Active Transportation (NO-HEAT) project, a two-year regional initiative studying heat impacts for people walking, biking, and taking transit. With a $1 million grant from the state’s Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness grant program, the MPO will partner with the City of Chelsea, City of Everett, City of Framingham, and City of Revere, and the advocacy organizations WalkMass, MassBike, Bike to the Sea, and the Mystic River Watershed Association to carry out the project. Last week, the MPO was notified that we've been awarded a $7.5M Safe Streets for All grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to support the implementation of our Vision Zero Action Plan currently under development. This is in addition to the $2.7M in funding the MPO received last year to begin work on the plan. Led by our Director of Projects and Partnerships, Rebecca Morgan, and Vision Zero Program Manager, Alexandra Kleyman, AICP, MPO staff will conduct additional planning projects, crash analysis, and roadway safety audits and collaborate with municipalities to fund, design, and implement quick-build traffic calming projects such as speed humps and high-visibility crosswalks. We're grateful to have the support of U.S. Senator Ed Markey as we embark on this work to foster regional coordination and lay the groundwork for future large-scale transportation infrastructure projects aligned with Vision Zero principles.
