July 28th was #WorldHepatitisDay, a day dedicated to recognizing the progress made by the hepatitis community and addressing current challenges. This day is powered by WorldHepatitisAlliance and its committed partners in the fight against hepatitis. There are five strains of the hepatitis virus, A-E, that can severely affect the liver. According to World Health Organization’s 2024 Global Hepatitis Report, hepatitis has become the second leading infectious cause of death worldwide. This year’s theme is #itstimeforaction, underscoring the need to expand access to diagnosis and treatment, particularly in unreached low and middle-income countries. The burden of viral #hepatitis varies regionally. Low and middle-income countries face heightened risks due to reduced access to vaccinations, limited reliable water sources, and an increased likelihood of contaminated food. #WorldHepatitisDay is recognized as one of World Health Organization’s eleven officially mandated global public health days. Share how you are raising awareness about hepatitis!

June is #PTSDAwarenessMonth. #PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) is a mental health condition triggered by experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. #PTSD can affect anyone after experiencing or witnessing a life-threatening event. However, women are more likely to face sexual assault, while men often experience accidents or combat. Transgender and nonbinary people also face unique trauma risks. PTSD affects about 6% of US adults in their lifetime, though the exact numbers are unclear. Women (8%) are more likely to develop PTSD than men (4%) due to different trauma types. Veterans face higher PTSD rates. Trauma risk also spikes during crises like wars or pandemics. It's normal to feel on edge or have trouble sleeping post-trauma. Daily activities can be hard, but most people feel better in weeks/months. Symptoms can start later or come and go, but it may be PTSD if they persist beyond a few months. PTSD symptoms include flashbacks, avoiding reminders, negative mood changes, and altered reactions. Based on symptoms and timing, PTSD can be characterized into acute, chronic, delayed onset, and complex types. Effective PTSD treatments include cognitive behavioral therapy, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, and medication. Getting help is crucial, as untreated PTSD can increase the risks of other mental health issues. #Screening is an important step in identifying and treating PTSD. June 27 is #PTSDScreeningDay. Join us in spreading awareness and encouraging others to get screened! #MentalHealthMatters #PTSDawareness
