About us

The Boston Foundation is one of the nation’s first and most impactful community foundations, with $1.9 billion in assets. Partnering with community members, donors, the public sector, businesses and nonprofits, we exist to close the gaps caused by our city’s greatest disparities, to advance economic justice, and to help build a better Boston. We collect data, commission research, share knowledge, develop dynamic programs, fuel new ideas and fund change. Our work informs public policy, catalyzes conversations and advocates not only for change, but for repair of the historical harms of inequity. Ultimately, we aim to support, contribute and create well-being and opportunity within our communities. TBF is also one of New England’s largest grantmakers, supporting nonprofits in Greater Boston through our endowment and working closely with our donors to support nonprofits locally, nationally and internationally.

"Overall, the effect is more housing on lots where it’s needed, but also more robust neighborhoods, both socially and economically." Could stairs be a step towards addressing Boston's housing crisis? Legalizing Mid-Rise Single Stair Housing in Massachusetts, the new report by Boston Indicators, the Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard, and Utile highlights how allowing single-staircase designs has the potential to unlock more affordable, space-efficient housing, estimating that we could net upwards of 130,000 new homes with reforms to the current requirement. Learn more about the current building code and proposed reforms in the full report: https://bit.ly/3Npjyfa You can also tune in now for the livestreamed report release event: https://bit.ly/4eR1Ay3

Our 2024 Climate Report, Powering Up Together, is here! What we learned? Private philanthropists could play a leading role in helping Boston get on track in the fight against climate change and particularly in powering up small buildings. We have an opportunity to come together to achieve Boston’s small building retrofit goals, centering long-term climate and equity impact, with the potential of addressing more than 19% of the city’s greenhouse-gas emissions. With this report, TBF, the Boston Green Ribbon Commission, and Prime Coalition are calling on philanthropists to help develop a new effort to transform the way Boston pursues its small building retrofit goals. Read the report and recommendations here: https://bit.ly/3Yf79ks

How can we best use increased funding in early education and child care to improve access, affordability, quality, and workforce strength? The COVID-19 pandemic forced a significant change in how we think about early childhood education, underscoring both its critical importance to working families and the chronic underinvestment in early education workers and centers. Today TBF and the Rennie Center are releasing 'Investment in Early Education and Child Care in MA,' a new report that looks at how early education and care is funded today, and explores the issues that continue to threaten the stability and potential of the sector. "Working with nonprofits who best understand the needs of those communities that are experiencing the most inequities is really key to how we do our work,” - Orlando Watkins, Vice President and Chief Program Officer. By listening to community and looking at the data, TBF is able to center equity in all we do and support nonprofits with aligned values and deep roots in the communities that they serve. Last week in the Bay State Banner, our Vice President and Chief Program Officer Orlando Watkins gave a glimpse into how TBF grantmaking supports the community alongside members of two community organizations – DeeDee’s Cry and Arka HR Solutions – that have received funding from TBF.
