About us
The Boston Foundation is one of the nation’s first and most impactful community foundations, with $1.9 billion in assets. Partnering with community members, donors, the public sector, businesses and nonprofits, we exist to close the gaps caused by our city’s greatest disparities, to advance economic justice, and to help build a better Boston. We collect data, commission research, share knowledge, develop dynamic programs, fuel new ideas and fund change. Our work informs public policy, catalyzes conversations and advocates not only for change, but for repair of the historical harms of inequity. Ultimately, we aim to support, contribute and create well-being and opportunity within our communities. TBF is also one of New England’s largest grantmakers, supporting nonprofits in Greater Boston through our endowment and working closely with our donors to support nonprofits locally, nationally and internationally.

“By eliminating tuition for qualified students, UMass Boston is sending a powerful, simple message about access to education, and bolstering its own place in making Boston a more equitable and vibrant city. We are honored to partner with them in our shared commitment to equity," - Lee Pelton, TBF President and CEO in a statement of support. In a significant step for equity in our region, UMass Boston has just announced the Beacon Pledge Program, a groundbreaking initiative offering free tuition to in-state students from families making $75,000 or less. This program ensures that these students can earn a bachelor’s degree without the burden of tuition costs. We applaud UMass Boston and the Healey-Driscoll Administration for advancing accessible and affordable education for all young people in MA! Read the announcement:

October is recognized as LGBTQ+ History Month, a celebration founded in 1994 by a Missouri school teacher to uplift queer and trans history, the history of LGBTQ+ rights, and intertwined civil rights movements. As we approach the end of the month, we reflect on our LGBTQ+ history in MA, with moments of pride and memories of deep loss. We celebrate the 20th anniversary of same-sex marriage last year, a milestone that brought immense joy and progress. Yet, we also honor the 25th anniversary of the tragic murder of trans activist Rita Hester.
