I’m excited to be moderating a panel at this year’s National Recreation and Park Association Conference in Atlanta! Next week, I’ll have the honor of leading a discussion on “The Promise and Peril of Big Data in Park Management” with some incredible thought leaders and colleagues: Nishant Kishore (EpiTech Consultants), Jill Valdés Horwood (Barr Foundation), and Michael DiMarco (Tectonix). We’ll dive into how technology and data are reshaping the way we manage public parks and waterfronts, with a special focus on balancing innovation, privacy, and community engagement. We’ll be showcasing insights from Boston Harbor Now’s Waterfront Data Project, a special initiative I’ve been leading for the last 2 years, which analyzed billions of data points to understand how people interact with Boston’s public open spaces before, during, and after the pandemic. Our panel will explore critical questions such as: • How can park managers use big data to improve accessibility and equity? • What are the challenges of turning data into actionable insights without overwhelming decision-makers? • How can we ensure privacy while still leveraging data to enhance public parks? I’m honored to be joined by experts in public health, technology, and equity who have been instrumental in the project. Looking forward to learning and sharing ideas on how emerging technologies and data can help create more inclusive, resilient public spaces!
