Our recent letter in Fertility & Sterility, led by our senior fellow Quetrell Heyward, MD, MBA, demonstrates the relatively low success rates in IUI, even in same sex females and unpartnered females. More importantly, we also demonstrate a clear plateau in clinical pregnancy/ongoing pregnancy rates after 2-3 IUI cycles in heterosexual couples and 4 IUI cycles in same sex females and unpartnered females. Patients should be clearly counseled on these success rates and the plateau effect across IUI cycles to decrease cost, time to pregnancy and patient drop out.
