We are a nonpartisan law and policy institute that seeks to improve our systems of democracy and justice.
About us
The Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law is a nonpartisan law and policy institute that works to reform, revitalize – and when necessary, defend – our country's systems of democracy and justice. At this critical moment, the Brennan Center is dedicated to protecting the rule of law and the values of Constitutional democracy. We focus on voting rights, campaign finance reform, ending mass incarceration, and preserving our liberties while also maintaining our national security. Part think tank, part advocacy group, part cutting-edge communications hub, we start with rigorous research. We craft innovative policies. And we fight for them – in Congress and the states, the courts, and in the court of public opinion.

"The SAVE Act must never become law. It would exclude millions of American citizens from voting. It is one of the worst voting bills in the history of Congress. [...]Let this not be the Congress that distinguishes itself as the first to engage in voter suppression." — Sean Morales-Doyle WATCH: https://bit.ly/4lbEx50

BREAKING: The House will vote on the SAVE Act this week. If the bill passes, more than 21 million Americans could be blocked from voting. The bill would require Americans to show documents like a passport or a birth certificate to register or re-register to vote. More than 21 million Americans don’t have these documents readily available. Younger people, married women, and voters of color are especially likely to be impacted. The bill’s requirement that voters produce these documents “in person” would also upend most voter registration methods — including registering online and by mail. The SAVE Act would be the first voter suppression bill ever passed by Congress. Lawmakers should be protecting the freedom to vote — not restricting it. We urge Congress to reject the SAVE Act.
