Vera has been working to transform the criminal legal and immigration systems for more than 60 years—and we won't stop until they’re fair for all. Because mass incarceration is wrong. Because immigration is under attack. Because poverty is not a crime. Because justice is for all. Because dignity is worth fighting for. Because we are Vera. Together, we can end mass incarceration. Securing equal justice, ending mass incarceration, and strengthening families and communities. Founded 1961.
About us
We envision a society that respects the dignity of every single person. And we're working to realize it. We work with others who share our vision to tackle the most pressing injustices of our day - from the causes and consequences of mass incarceration, racial disparities, and the loss of public trust in law enforcement, to the unmet needs of the vulnerable, the marginalized, and those harmed by crime and violence.

“Regardless of whether you’re coming back or not, you should be treated like a human being.” —Chloe Aquart, director of Vera’s Restoring Promise initiative The vast majority of the nearly 2 million people incarcerated in the U.S. endure brutal conditions—but proven solutions centered on human dignity exist. The Marshall Project reports on how Vera's Restoring Promise initiative is reimagining prison culture: https://lnkd.in/gVT4xwFB

This #HispanicHeritageMonth and beyond, it’s imperative that we listen to and uplift stories from Hispanic and Latino communities. To learn more about the immigration system—and all the caveats, challenges, and rules embedded in it—check out A24 and Julio Torres’ #Problemista, available now on various streaming services. We, alongside immigrant rights advocates from the Fairness to Freedom coalition had the opportunity to watch it in May and can’t recommend it enough! Here is a behind the scenes look at the screening:

“What’s happened in Boston and other places across the country demonstrates how integral civilian-led, community-centered approaches are to the public safety ecosystem. Sustaining improvements in public safety requires ongoing coordination, including government using and sharing information to guide collective efforts.” —Daniela Gilbert, director of Vera’s Redefining Public Safety initiative Boston’s homicide rate reached a historic low in 2023 and the city is already on track to surpass its goal of diminishing annual homicides 20% by 2026. The downswing in violence is largely due to years of government cooperation and civilian-led efforts that emphasize support, violence and harm prevention, and care. https://lnkd.in/e_szH6YS

“I think a lot about all of those downstream or collateral consequences, the impact that the incarceration of one individual has on families and society.” Urban Institute’s Jocelyn Fontaine joined us on Episode 3 of #The30YearProject to unpack how incarceration affects families, communities, and society as a whole. 🎧Listen to the episode now on #ApplePodcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. https://lnkd.in/ePW875iG

"Despite having the financial means to pay rent, my criminal record—a remnant of my past struggles—continues to impede my ability to secure a home." Shawanna Vaughn’s story is not unique. People leaving incarceration face significant obstacles to finding safe, affordable housing. These barriers contribute to a cycle of homelessness and incarceration and make it difficult for people to move on with their lives—without making communities any safer. Formerly incarcerated people reflect on the need for fair housing policies: https://lnkd.in/e9UBDKaH

The United States executed five people this week. Vera firmly opposes the death penalty—an unconscionable and racially unjust sentence that defies our mission to end the overcriminalization of people of color, immigrants, and people experiencing poverty. Missouri executed Marcellus Williams despite clear evidence of innocence and opposition even from the prosecutor in the case. Texas killed Travis Mullis. Oklahoma put Emmanuel Littlejohn to death. South Carolina executed Freddie Owens These are just four of five executions planned in the last week. And, sadly, they will not be the last.

"Proposition 36 pretends the task can be accomplished on the cheap. It can’t. It’s more illusion than solution. Vote no.” The Los Angeles Times Editorial Board on why Californians should vote #NoOnProp36:

We all deserve to be treated with dignity and fairness. Yet, candidates across the political spectrum continue to rely on harmful myths that falsely link immigrants and people seeking asylum at the southern border to crime in the #UnitedStates. This #HispanicHeritageMonth, we’re here to say loud and clear: it’s well past time to dismiss inflammatory rhetoric. Honoring this month-long celebration requires advocating for facts, fairness, dignity, and #ImmigrantsRights.
