We are pleased to announce that our geothermal project for The Beresford cooperative in NYC has been recognized by Engineering News-Record NY in their 2024 Best Projects list. This acknowledgement from one of the most respected publications in the engineering and design profession is a testament to the innovation and expertise of the Brightcore Energy team. The project successfully integrated a geothermal heating and cooling system into the building’s existing mechanical equipment as part of a system retrofit. It showcased several engineering and design innovations and employed our proprietary Urban Geo product. Urban Geo leverages cutting-edge design and drilling technology to seamlessly incorporate geothermal systems into space-constrained areas the built environment-in this case, withing the footprint of the building itself!. This groundbreaking approach, coupled with solutions developed by our engineers and Center of Excellence team in Sweden, were key to the project's success. "This achievement underscores that with a dedicated team, a focus on innovation, and the willingness to challenge the status quo, remarkable outcomes can be realized." said Michael Richter, President of Brightcore Energy. Beyond recognition, this award underscores that geothermal is a feasible, energy-efficient and cost-effective solution for heating and cooling buildings. New York City's Local Law 97 (LL97) is part of the Green New Deal, a landmark regulation aimed at drastically reducing carbon emissions from buildings over 25,000 square feet. Buildings contribute nearly 70% of New York City’s greenhouse gas emissions, making this regulation crucial for the city’s climate goals. As decarbonization becomes central to real estate, demand for sustainable spaces is expected to rise, with many buildings at risk of losing value if they fail to meet these standards. Real estate demand is shifting as corporate tenants increasingly seek sustainable buildings to meet ESG targets. This is driving up demand for low-carbon office spaces in New York City, but supply is lagging. JLL predicts that 65% of the demand for sustainable spaces will go unmet by 2030 unless real estate decarbonization efforts accelerate. Around 80% of buildings are expected to comply, but as regulations tighten, an estimated 80% of buildings will require further upgrades by 2030 to meet the new standards.
