Bucks County, Pennsylvania filed a climate accountability lawsuit on Monday against a handful of major oil and gas companies and their chief trade association, alleging the entities lied about the climate consequences of fossil fuels and deployed “tobacco-industry-style campaigns" to mislead the public. Named defendants include BP, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, ExxonMobil, Shell, Phillips 66, and the American Petroleum Institute. The lawsuit brings state tort claims of public and private nuisance, trespass, strict liability, negligent product liability and negligence, and civil conspiracy. Bucks County is the first community in Pennsylvania to sue Big Oil over alleged climate deception. With the filing, the county joins more than three dozen municipalities and states across the US that are turning to the courts in attempts to hold fossil fuel companies accountable for their role in driving climate breakdown. 91% of investors surveyed say the SEC’s new climate disclosure rule will enable them to make better investment decisions. 92% said "ESG data is important for assessing companies’ long-term financial outlook." 88% said that "ESG data should be treated with the same rigor as financial data." Companies that currently report this data expressed confidence in their ability to meet the new requirements. Companies that don't expressed concern over the costs of catching up, expected to run a few hundred thousand dollars per year for public companies with $250+ million in revenue. 85% of executives agree that integrating financial and sustainability reporting significantly eases the process of sharing this data with investors and the public. So the companies that have been doing this, who recognize the importance and value of integrating sustainability into their operations, who know that we need a healthy environment and people in which to do business, who see the direction that we're heading and how the cost of prevention is usually a fraction of the alternative ... well, that's a run-on sentence!! I could rewrite it with AI or just conclude with this: Corporate strategists who ignore or fight the evolution of business practices are destined to shoulder the burden of catching up. For now, a few hundred thousand dollars will hardly scratch executive bonuses, so get with the program. An unsustainable business isn't destined to lead. Late this morning, the SEC voted to adopt new climate reporting standards for public companies. While not as comprehensive as we'd hoped, it's still a tick in the win column.
