This summer, I had the privilege of interning with the LSU Coastal Ecosystem Design Studio, made possible by the support of the US Army Corps of Engineers, Engineering With Nature® (EWN®). It was a privilege to be among the 21 students selected from across the country, each bringing a unique perspective to the program. My team's focus was on "ecosystem design for the N. Broad corridor and surrounding neighbourhoods, utilizing urban green infrastructure to address stormwater challenges in New Orleans. This opportunity allowed us to explore various innovative green solutions to stormwater challenges, with an emphasis on the Broad area of New Orleans reducing the urban heat island effect and increasing enegy efficiency
We had the chance to visit and collaborate with esteemed professionals and institutions, like the Greater New Orleans Foundation and Waggonner & Ball Architects. Working alongside FUAD HASAN, Justin Harris, Willow Cook, and Madison Megrath was a valuable learning experience, and I greatly benefited from the diverse expertise each person brought to the table.
I am deeply grateful to Traci Birch, PhD, AICP, the Associate Director of the program, and our group advisor, Sergio H. Padilla, for their guidance. I also extend my thanks to our partners, Broad Community Connections, and Dasjon Jordan, for their essential input. I am particularly thankful to jonathan hird P.E. for his insightful critique and encouragement, and to Kimberly Elman Zarecor for her support.
This experience has been truly invaluable and will undoubtedly impact my future endeavours.
