Our second year of Recycle Dat!–a partnership with City of New Orleans and Grounds Krewe–was a major success! We are so proud to report this year we recycled the following: ♻️ 4,288 lbs of glass ♻️ 4,564 pounds of aluminum cans (approximately 154,263 cans) ♻️ 12,729 pounds of beads and throws Additionally, for the first time this year, the Osprey Initiative-run recycling hub collected 306 pounds of plastic bottles (approximately 8,300 bottles) as part of their pilot run with Recycle Dat! For context, last year, the Recycle Dat! program recycled 1,475 lbs of aluminum (roughly 50,000 cans), 1,500 lbs of glass, and 11,535 pounds of Mardi Gras beads and throws. We are THRILLED with the response to the Recycle Dat! program and send warm thanks to all who volunteered and recycled with us!

Great event today at a lovely venue, Nieux Society, discussing a greener and more sustainable Mardi Gras and learning more about the unique challenges that New Orleans and Louisiana face during these events. Important to consider innovative solutions like the work being done by Grounds Krewe and understand cultural aspects and tourism implications as well to challenge a throwaway society. Weekly Friday Personal Post: Thank you Sustainable Packaging Coalition (SPC) for the opportunity to speak next week at SPC Impact about the Mardi Gras recycling effort, Recycle Dat, alongside several of our local partners. At SPC Impact, over 800 packaging and sustainability professionals representing the entire packaging value chain will be in New Orleans for three days of learning, networking, and inspiration. This year's theme is "Less Carbon Better Packaging." I'm moderating a session on Wednesday from the mainstage that is focused on Recycle Dat, an innovative, multi-partner initiative to recycle beverage cans, glass bottles, and beads along the main parade route during the two weekends before Mardi Gras Tuesday. My organization, Can Manufacturers Institute, supported the first year of Recycle Dat in 2023. We supported it again this year and used it to launch the Every Can Counts U.S. chapter that is focused on raising awareness of the importance of can recycling and increasing can recycling away from home, all as part of reaching our ambitious U.S. aluminum beverage can recycling rate targets. The 2024 effort captured nearly 3X the number of used beverage cans along the parade route than in 2023. In total, that's nearly 150,000 used beverage cans collected over just two daytime weekends of operation that definitely would have went to landfill considering there's no public space recycling and the city's sanitation crews sweep up everything each night and take it to the landfill. You talk about less carbon, those cans getting recycled is carbon savings equivalent to driving more than 35,000 miles. There's also the 215,000 used beverage cans brought directly to the local metal recycling facility during the two weeks we were doubling the market rate payout to incentivize greater can collection and sale. None of this would have been possible without our local partners. You can see the many partners listed on the Recycle Dat website I'm putting in the comments.
