We aim to transform lives and build community through the expressive, educational and therapeutic powers of music.

About us

Founded in 1897, the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music has been transforming the lives of New Yorkers through music for over a century. We offer private music lessons in every major instrument, as well as group classes, Suzuki method, orchestral and choral ensembles, and on-site music therapy at our historic home in Park Slope. These students range in age from 6 months to 104 years! We provide music instruction to schools and community centers all over New York City, reaching more than 4,000 public school students each year, 80% of whom live below the poverty line. We also provide clinical music therapy to over 1,400 kids and adults with special needs each year, both at our Park Slope facility and at schools and community-based organizations across the five boroughs. Throughout the year, we present 200 concerts and community events on average, many of which are free to the public. Our mission is to remove the barriers that hinder anyone from experiencing music, and to provide New Yorkers of all ages the tools to lead more empathetic, more empowered, more joyful lives.

  • Thank you CUNY TV for the wonderful segment on BKCM music therapist Rafael Stepto's work at P.S. 3! “The music therapy program here is part of a larger effort by BKCM. It brings licensed creative arts music therapists to thousands of children and adults across the city–therapists who are trained in multiple instruments and specialties, including areas like special education and psychology.”

  • BKCM is thrilled to announce the recipients of the 2024-2025 Jazz Leaders Fellowship, Key Hutchinson and Goussy Célestin! Now in its fourth year, the Jazz Leaders Fellowship provides Black women and Black non-binary jazz musicians with resources to further develop their craft and pursue projects that advance their careers, including a $12,500 grant, rehearsal space and gig opportunities. We are beyond excited to work with Key and Goussy throughout the coming year as they continue their journeys in both musical leadership and musical artistry. 🎶 Key Hutchinson: Key Hutchinson is a versatile guitarist, composer, and producer from Brooklyn, NY whose multivalent influences can be traced to her Caribbean lineage, her love for popular music, her conservatory training, and a remarkable musical career supporting performers in the fields of Pop, R&B, jazz, and other experimental genres. As an artist, she channels her knowledge of guitar, composition, and electronic production into a creative exploration of original works, live performance and music education. 🎶 Goussy Célestin: Brooklyn-born Haitian-American artist Goussy Célestin interchanges the roles of pianist, composer, vocalist, dancer, writer and arranger with ease. Goussy has performed for the last two decades for audiences locally, nationally and in Cuba, England, Haiti, Wales, and Japan. Her current mission integrates all of her disciplines in her project, “Goussy Célestin’s Ayiti Brass,” incorporating elements of traditional Haitian folklore and jazz. Goussy is a faculty member and manager for music education programs at Jazz at Lincoln Center and a professor at BerkleeNYC. To all the amazing musicians who applied this year: Thank you so much for sharing a radiant piece of your talent with BKCM! Applications for 2025-26 are just around the corner, opening on August 1.

  • This morning, Gothamist and WNYC Radio ran a wonderful article and radio segment on BKCM's partnership with I.S. 235 Academy for New Americans in Queens, where students who have recently come to NYC as refugees and migrants take guitar and percussion classes with our Music Partners teaching artists. "In an academic year in which tens of thousands of migrant kids entered the New York City public school system, including 160 students at I.S. 235, it is one place where the newcomers have quietly embedded themselves in their adopted communities, forging new friendships with the help of teachers, administrators and creative initiatives." Our Music Partners and Music Therapy programs reach 4,500 students across NYC, in public schools, community centers and shelters. This article eloquently captures why this work matters: because music can offer a welcoming haven of safety and joy, even amid the most challenging circumstances. https://lnkd.in/ePYNNany

  • Thank you to City & State NY for recognizing BKCM Executive Director Chad Cooper among this year's Brooklyn Power 100. Under Chad's leadership and with collaboration across our talented staff, the organization is now serving more than 7,000 people throughout Brooklyn and at 80 partners sites across all five boroughs. “Eight years ago, Chad Cooper left Deutsche Bank to run a struggling Park Slope music school. His turnaround performance is as extraordinary as a Beethoven symphony. In his first two years, the conservatory increased assets by $400,000 and boosted attendance fivefold – and its budget rose to $8 million this year, up from $2.8 million when he started.” https://lnkd.in/euxKJ2xY #NonprofitLeaders #NYCArts #MusicEducation

  • Yesterday's New York Music Month Conference was full of great conversations and thought-provoking insights. From exciting mentorship and music education initiatives to conversations about protecting artists and creators in the ever-changing music landscape, it was inspiring to see all the ways that New Yorkers are working to make this city this diverse, thriving musical capital that it is. Thanks to the NYC Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment for bringing us together, and for partnering with BKCM to enable us to offer free, accessible rehearsal time for NYC musicians throughout the month of June!

  • Over the weekend, the Conservatory's annual Open Stages festival brought more than 200 performers to 19 stages across Park Slope for an amazing day of music and dancing, free and open to the whole community! We are grateful to our incredible performers, community partners, event staff and attendees for making this the best Open Stages yet. And none of this would have been possible without the generous support of our Festival Sponsors: Tito's Handmade Vodka, the Joe and Clara Tsai Foundation's Social Justice Fund, Latham & Watkins, Fried Frank, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, Sidley Austin LLP and Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP. Thank you for believing in the value of music in, by and for the community!
