Partner Matthew Richardson is quoted by Law360 regarding artificial intelligence and persistent security holes among vendors, which are amplifying concerns about efforts by hostile nations and other cyberattackers to disrupt and discredit U.S. elections. As officials work to protect against both established and emerging risks, these vulnerabilities remain a pressing issue. "The biggest cybersecurity dangers relate to interference with social media and unfair manipulation of the public using AI, and that's a new thing in this election cycle," Richardson said. "In the last presidential cycle, the technology wasn't really mature enough to fool anybody, but now we're starting to see deepfake videos [and other AI-generated content] that are designed to dishonestly influence public opinion." We are proud to sponsor, for the second time, the upcoming International Law Book Facility (ILBF) charity’s 2025 law undergraduate essay competition, and ILBF’s charitable mission to support the rule of law and access to justice through sharing legal knowledge. Now in its fourth year, the competition is open to all law undergraduates studying at UK universities and provides a coveted opportunity to win a great prize, as well as giving students the chance to research and formulate their ideas about an important topic. This year’s competition will be announced by the Rt. Hon. the Baroness Carr of Walton-on-the-Hill, the Lady Chief Justice of England and Wales, and the winner will receive a full week’s internship at Brown Rudnick. Jeff Jonas, a partner in Brown Rudnick’s Bankruptcy & Corporate Restructuring group and chair of the Bankruptcy Litigation practice, has been chosen as a Law360 2024 Bankruptcy MVP. The profile noted that Jonas helped spearhead the successful dismissals of Johnson & Johnson’s first two bankruptcies tied to talc injury claims and the bankruptcy of a 3M subsidiary facing injury claims over military earplugs. Jonas characterized the J&J cases as the largest at the intersection of tort and bankruptcy. “Those were pretty profound cases,” he said. Jonas also highlighted the internal development of a mighty restructuring group featuring a lot of young lawyers as one of his biggest accomplishments in the past year. “I take a lot of pride in that,” he said. “The finding from HMRC that Käärmann had deliberately failed to notify a significant capital gains liability was not only relevant to the question of his own fitness and propriety but also, given his role as a chief executive of a public company, the reputation of Wise as well. The actions of senior individuals, even outside the strict confines of their role, can affect how the firm that they work for is viewed.” - Ian Weinstein, contentious regulatory partner at Brown Rudnick LLP spoke to The Times about the FCA fining Wise plc CEO Kristo Käärmann for not notifying them of significant tax issues.
