This week at 29th & Montgomery we had to set seven 125-ft long girders, each weighing roughly 55,000 lbs, over five railroad tracks. The girders had to swing below the 230KV PECO electrical lines and above the Amtrak catenary lines, using a Liebherr 500-ton crane. Amtrak/Conrail provided track protection with a 2-hour work window in the middle of the night and we got all seven placed safely in two nights.

On our CAP Bridge Project, we were tasked with demolishing the existing bridge which spans over I-95 Northbound and Southbound as well as both adjacent on-ramps (104 box beams in each span). In addition we also had to demo the Walnut Street Bridge (11 box beams). PennDOT and the City of Philadelphia allowed us to close I-95 Northbound from Saturday night at 6PM through Monday morning at 5AM. Our sub and crew anticipated demolishing roughly 60% of the bridge in this timeframe. Instead, they were able to complete the entire demolition safely and open the highway to traffic 5 hours early. What an incredible effort by Atlantic Coast Dismantling, LLC, our labor force at Buckley & Company, Inc., and Blaire Corp for hauling to Bella Materials LLC's yard. Looking forward to repeating this again in the Southbound direction. I hope you enjoy the timelapse video.

Please enjoy this video of another demolition effort that took place this weekend as part of the $329M CAP Project. In order to build the new 11-acre pedestrian bridge park, we had to first demolish the existing bridge at Front & Chestnut. This portion, containing 104 box beams extending over I-95 Southbound as well as the Market Street on-ramp, was a much more difficult task than the recent I-95 Northbound demo due to having to close BOTH I-95 SB and I-676 Eastbound On-Ramp completely, with limited access in and out to haul debris away. We had 36 hours to get it done. Our subcontractor Atlantic Coast Dismantling, LLC absolutely crushed this. The vast number of gigantic excavators with hammers, shears, and munchers as well as huge Yuke dump trucks hauling away debris felt like a Transformers movie. Also a gigantic effort was made by our crews at Buckley & Company, Inc., Established Traffic Control (signage), Kuharchik Construction (electric), B Blair CORP (trucking) Zone Striping Inc (line striping), as well as Pennoni (engineering), Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), City of Philadelphia, and the Philadelphia Police Department, working around the clock in unison to get this completed. And every single worker went home safe (and tired) at the end of the day. This is America at its finest. Drone video was taken by Billy Kyle.

On Tuesday and Wednesday we set the final 8 beams at the I-95 Bridge Collapse Project. This is the location at the Cottman Avenue off-ramp where a tanker truck collided into the abutment wall last June 2023, causing both northbound and southbound to shut down completely for 12 days. The positioning of the crane and delivery of the beams in the middle of the highway allowed us to install them during the day without shutting the highway down for extended periods of time. Each beam is roughly 103-ft long and weighs 31,000 lbs. Our crews have been working overtime, mostly 6 and 7 days a week for a year straight to get this section of I-95 and the off-ramp open as soon as possible. We're almost there!

Congratulations to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and their I-95 Central Access Philadelphia (CAP) project team on another successful demolition! Starting at 5 p.m. on February 24, construction crews worked around the clock through the weekend to demolish the remaining concrete structure over I-95’s southbound lanes between Chestnut and Walnut streets and reopen the highway to traffic in time for the Monday morning commute. Take a closer look at the demolition activities in this timelapse video. With demolition done, PennDOT’s project team can now start to build the new CAP structure and 11.5-acre park that will help reconnect the Delaware River Waterfront with Philly’s Center City neighborhoods.
