Michael Baker International was chosen by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) in collaboration with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) to lead a full-service bridge replacement project of the US 51 Bridge. The purpose of the project is to improve cross-river mobility between Wickliffe, Kentucky, and Cairo, Illinois, by addressing the safety and reliability issues caused by the narrow lane widths, lack of shoulders, and tight curve of the existing bridge and its approaches. The 86-year-old structure carries US 51, US 60, and US 62 over the Ohio River. The bridge is one of just four highway crossings of the Ohio River between Kentucky and Illinois, making it a vital crossing to the region. The project is about to begin a geotechnical investigation to determine the existing conditions and assess the potential impacts on the design of the bridge. This work includes using the pictured lift boat, traveling under the I-55 Bridge en route through Memphis to its final destination, to drill and test soil samples. Drilling depths will approach 400 feet below the mud line of the river. Some of the deeper borings will require four to five days to complete. The drilling work will occur 24 hours a day, seven days a week until the work is complete. #ProjectUpdate #BridgeSafety #Infrustructure

  • Interstate 30 is a heavily trafficked corridor that connects Little Rock, Arkansas, to Dallas, Texas. In Southwest Arkansas near the city of Arkadelphia, two aging bridges on this thoroughfare provided passage over the De Roche Creek. In 2017, the time had come for the crossings to be replaced due to almost continual repairs being needed. The Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) and Michael Baker International utilized an innovative Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) method known as a lateral slide to replace the existing structures. This was notably the first time that a lateral slide had been used in Arkansas. Under this method, the new bridge superstructures were constructed next to the existing bridges on temporary falsework. Once complete, the existing bridges were demolished, and the new bridges were slid into place. The new bridges now accommodate three lanes of traffic in each direction, allowing more people and goods to pass over the creek and reducing delays, which can have economic benefits while also reducing emissions and travel times.
