BLM manages one in every 10 acres of land in U.S. encompassing forests, mountains, rangelands, arctic tundra and deserts
About us
The BLM manages more land – 256 million surface acres – than any other Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The Bureau, with a budget of about $1 billion, also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM’s multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, and cultural resources on the public lands. In 2021, join us in celebrating our 75th anniversary! Learn more: https://www.blm.gov/about/history/75th-anniversary. #ReImaginePublicLands #PublicLands75

The Sky Islands of southeastern Arizona are a bowl-like natural feature that blocks out many electromagnetic signals. It's an ideal environment for the Department of Defense to train intelligence specialists and drone operators. It's also part of a unique ecosystem that includes millions of acres of public lands that we're working on restoring. Learn more in our latest podcast: https://ow.ly/RBe950TRY7h.

THANK YOU to the amazing volunteers, partners and staff who participated in this year's National Public Lands Day, the nation’s largest single-day volunteer event for public lands. 👏 During this annual event, volunteers completed service projects like building trails, restoring native ecosystems, collecting trash and much more! These service projects not only benefit our lands, but also give volunteers the opportunity to learn more about public lands and understand the benefits they provide. The event builds partnerships between the public and private sector stakeholders and local communities based upon their mutual interests in America's public lands. This year, our participation grew! Over 7,000 volunteers gathered across the nation at over 120 events on BLM lands, contributing an estimated 45,000 hours of service worth over $1.5M in estimated volunteer service. While enjoying a day exploring BLM-managed public lands in North Dakota, the Fisher family spotted something unmistakable - a dinosaur bone. A year later, after connecting with a curator at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, the Fisher family and a dig team returned to the site of their discovery with a film crew in tow. Under the scorching summer sun, the team began cleaning rock and sediment off the find, and very quickly saw this was no ordinary fossil. The family had found a teenaged Tyrannosaurus rex, a rare find since dubbed "Teen Rex." The Fisher family's incredible find is now on display at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science and documented in the film, T. Rex. #NationalFossilDay 📷 Teen Rex fossil on display. The lower jaw on the left, upper jaws to the right, and a large palm frond are visible. BLM photo.

Today on Indigenous Peoples' Day, please join us in celebrating the cultures and history of Indigenous and Native communities across the nation! The vast public lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management feature significant evidence of the 10,000 plus years of human prehistory and history in the western United States and Alaska. We work closely with Native American Tribes and communities to identify the cultural values, religious beliefs, traditional practices and legal rights that could be affected by actions on public lands. #IndigenousPeoplesDay
